After Death - Zombi 4 (1988)

- written September 2003

Instead of finding a cure for cancer on this island, the scientists are raising the dead back to life and the dead aren’t gonna be nice about the imoprtune wake-up call. Soon the scientists are running for their lives and even a few party-goers looking for fun may not be able to help anyone, even themselves.

Overall: Although listed as a sequel to Zombi 3 and written by the same people, it just doesn’t feel like a sequel. It is a zombie movie but clearly one that has more holes than the zombie’s bodies do. These zombies can talk, can run and can think, unlike traditional movie zombies. Also, these zombies seem to just wake up without any special help from contaminants in the air or anything - they just show up. And the usual shooting of the zombies everywhere but the head is a continuous theme in the film – you know they need to be shot in the head to kill them so why does everyone keep aiming elsewhere? And how come you can shoot them 85 times and they walk through the bullets but whack them with a wood log, and forget about it. Can’t miss the gay porn star, Jeff Stryker, can ya? Doesn’t matter since the dubbing is so brutal, you’d think they all spoke Italian. The whole speaking of “4 words” while opening the book of the dead sounded really familiar, considering one of the words was “barata.” (can you name the film?) I thought the zombies really looked like the Jawa from the “Star Wars” films. Or maybe even well-covered nuns? The zombies all look like the have nun’s habits on. I guess the fact that we have new zombie characteristics took me off guard but the ending was nicely unpredictable.

Comparison: Altered States meets Serpent and the Rainbow
