Summary: Julie has a fear of the dark and while trying to fight it off, on the way to her graduate degrees, she ends up coming into contact with a friend of hers. Turns out his friends and her have something in common: fear of the dark. And that fear is coming to kill them!
Overall: As much as the name “Wes Craven” does get people’s attention as being attached to films that work (Last House on the Left, Nightmare on Elm St), are you aware how much crap he’s either directed or produced (Shocker, Cursed, People under the Stairs, Chiller)? Well count this film there too. I do think this may be my last Craven film. I mean...it’s flat out awful. And with that I mean, the script. Watch the film...then ask yourself...”Who are “They”? The film is about fear of the dark...and we have 4 characters afraid of it. We see brief snippets of creatures but nothing more. They’re more hallucinating than anything else. It’s already agreed that drugs can save them from the visions so do the creatures really exist? And frankly, after 55 mins of the film, you still haven’t seen the “bad guys” yet. 1 hour. Really? Just a bad bad written film all over the place. A mess, really. What was good about the film...was the alternate ending on the dvd. That’s perfect for the film that Craven gives us. It’s a psychological thriller...the girl is clearly losing her mind. That’s a good ending. The film’s ending misses the point. And yet...please skip this film.
