Overall: I watched the "extended cut" on DVD and after comparing to what I read about the theatrical version, I have become torn over the film. I found the "extended cut" a bit too long and slow and yet hear the theatrical cut was too quick and fast into effects with little plot. I'm always one to support additional story, plot and exposition and so I'll say, make sure you watch the updated, longer version. That's always the way to go. With that in mind, you'll love the effects, the cinematorgraphy, the camera work. Such a trmendous job was worked on the sets and I just love the countryside and village scenes. The effects can be a little too much CGI at times and even the wolf "transformation" makes you really appreciate the tremendous make-up job from "American Werewolf in London." But overall the film has 2 tremendous actors (Del Toro and Hopkins) and such a great job by folks behind the camera. It's not gonna repalce or make you forget about Lon Chaney's job in the original. Chaney is still superior. But the film is a great piece of work in visual imagery and an enjoyable time to be had. Go for it. Comparison: The Wolfman meets The Matrix |
