4 young adults pick up a female hitchhiker on their way back from Mexico to Dallas for a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert. On the way they find a disoriented woman walking the road and they pick her up. Although they try to take her to safety, she thinks the group is taking her back into hell. She pulls out a gun and commits suicide. The group now tries to report the suicide and make it to the concert. What ensues is a massacre…
Overall: Well I had high expectations for the movie given the challenging task they were undertaking: remaking a film that didn’t need to be remade. The film piles on the gore, piles up the frights and unsettling images but forgets the story. We have additional storylines of engagement rings, incest, skin diseases, baby snatchings, etc. and none of these get anything more than just dropped in to confuse the viewer. What made the original freaky is that the family was just outright “redneck” and “insane.” They were cannibals and wore skin from their victims. In this movie, Leatherface is a deformed child who had a skin disease and got picked on. There’s not cannibalism at all either - just a deformed mutant who enjoys killing people. And what exactly was with the young girl and her “womb of blood” - might think that maybe a forced abortion or something and yet the kid is pretty old (if that is even hers). And where did she get the gun??? Ok, we know where she got it, but never used it except on herself - when found she’s got no blood or practically no bruises but she must have escaped…once the family figured out she had been found they never seemed relieved or shocked or anything and there is no evidence anyone escaped. And what happened to the young male hitchhiker from the original???? It’s a decent film but left a lot to be desired. Comparison: House of 1000 Corpses meets “24” P.S. This was ranked as the worst film of 2003 by Roger Ebert. |
