Stepford Wives (2004)

- written January 2005

Joanna is a successful president of a TV Network but after a some shocking events is fired from her Job. Her husband, Walter, quits his job to move them from Manhattan to the planned community of Stepford, Connecticut. They seem to fit in well with their new neighbors until Joanna starts to notice that the women in the town don’t exactly act like normal women. All of her neighbors love to clean house and have absolutely no goals for themselves. That’s when she decides something is wrong and she’s gonna find out what it is. However, this investigatory work might end up costing her everything!

Overall: It’s been a long time since I saw the original film but I had hoped this film was gonna at least be scary and frightening. However when I saw it, I knew it was gonna be a light-hearted comedy. Nevertheless, the film disappoints. It’s got a great cast but the story ends up as a mess.

The film actually doesn’t just have plot holes, it has major plot inconsistencies. The women start off as “robotic.” The whole ATM machine scene actually hurts this film immeasurably. If the women are sparking, if the women spit out $$ through their mouth...then how can this occur if the women only have “nanochips” in their heads?? The end of the movie basically ruins the first 80 minutes and unfortunately the word on the street is that changes were needed after audiences had issues. Well the stuff they included in the theatrical release didn’t help. On top of that the idea of the film is that the men are creating their prefect idea of women as being servants. But how does the film end? With the lead man as a robot. You just shot down the entire background of the film and the entire motivation of the whole town!

It’s sad to see what the remake has become and frankly, once they made it they felt the need to release something. But it’s a sorry mess.
