The Sentinel (1977)

A fashion model moves into a house inhabited by a priest. She begins having strange problems, has trouble sleeping at night, and has some flashbacks of her attempted suicide. She complains of the noise caused by her strange neighbors, but finds out that the house is only occupied by the priest and herself, and ultimately discovers that she has been put in the house for a reason. Someone is protecting Earth from demons in Hell and she might be the last hope for mankind.

Overall: Based on a Jeffrey Konvitz’s novel, this movie arguably has one of the overall greatest casts in cinema history. Some actors were just starting or just ending their careers but catch this: Martin Balsam, John Carradine, José Ferrer, Ava Gardner, Burgess Meredith, Deborah Raffin, Eli Wallach, Christopher Walken, Jerry Orbach, Beverly D'Angelo, Tom Berenger, William Hickey, and Jeff Goldblum. It’s an interesting story, which if anything has almost too many characters but still manages to be fairly cohesive. I think the film could have been better but dropping some people and frankly once the cat has its birthday party, the “neighbors” are not seen again for another 30 minutes. I liked the ending but again it wasn’t clear enough why Allison is chosen, over anyone else. It’s hinted at but is a bit fuzzy on that fact. Basically, I still think this is a good film and worth the watching.
