The Ring (2002)

- written April 2003

Rachel is investigating a myth of sorts: a video that after being watched will cause the death of the viewer a week later. One of Rachel’s cousins dies after watching the film and she’s gotta investigate and she’s just watched the video. After getting her ex-husband and kid involved, if she doesn’t solve the mystery, they’ll all be dead.

Overall: This is a remake of the Japanese film ”Ringu” which I saw prior to this film. After comparing the 2 films, I gotta say this film is easily more concise, tighter and overall a better film. The beginning sequence is scarier than in “Ringu” but the “film within a film” - the video is so much scarier in the Japanese version. The whole lighthouse thing is new and kind of a red herring to substitute the relationships/romance of “Ringu” and replace it was more mystery and intrigue. It connects the dots better but overall is a better film.

          Comparison: Ringu meets Exorcist
