Prophecy 3: The Ascent (2000)

- written June 2000

Danyael is a preacher who speaks the word of God, but does it with a different spin on events. He thinks God has forsaken everyone and that people need to take care of themselves and remind God that they are still without his guidance. But one day a blind man assassinates Danyael and with no less a visitor than the archangel Gabriel watching on. But Gabriel isn't trying to "keep the monkeys out of Heaven." He has resigned himself to a human existence and is just passing from city to city enjoying life. But Zothael is here replacing Gabriel to separate Heaven forever. Turns out he wants Danyael for himself, dead or alive. And indeed Danyael awakes from the dead, and after being on the coroner's table of none other than our good buddy Joseph. Joseph saw this all before - with Tommy Daggett. Once Zothael realizes how special Danyael is, he searches for him - eliminating everyone in his path. But Joseph also is concerned over what has been happening and he too goes to search for Danyael and brings Maggie, Danyael's girlfriend along too. But this battle is really between Zothael and Danyael - with Gabriel sitting on the sidelines unsure of whether or not he should get involved. But God has a special place for Danyael - and this itself is enough to end the war in Heaven once and for all - you have to watch to find out which side wins.

Overall: I was very unhappy with there being a part 2 so I was twice as upset with this film. I think this film tried to end the series but by 2005, we know it didn’t. What doesn’t work is that Gabriel has been reduced to being a homeless man, and the nephalim in part 2 and importance of the soul in part 1 seem like afterthoughts in the "2nd Angel War." If this Danyael was so important, why was there a part 1 & 2? Obviously Christopher Walken's part 1 performance was magnificent, and great enough to build 2 sequels around him. But the film is very weak and confusing too. Of course toss in a few people from part 1: the coroner, waitress from the diner, and the girl Mary. Plus after the fine performance of Viggo Mortensen in part 1 as the Devil, this film tends to bastardize that character. Film is weak by itself and worse when adding to the prior films. Vincent Spano is brutally horrible every time he says "Monkey" - truly that word was made for Walken - the bad guys suck and the good guys are overdrawn and bland. Skip it.
