The Scorpion King (2002)

- written April 2006

Summary: The evil Memnon is using the psychic powers of a sorceress to foretell his great victories. Whatever she says will come true, he goes out to ensure it will happen. The few remaining peoples left in the area decide to pay a few assassins to kill the sorceress and hence, stop Memnon. But life isn’t that easy and soon the assassin and the sorceress will unite to stop Memnon once and for all.

Overall: The only reasons this film got made and did well was that it piggy-backed the 2 successful Mummy films and then cast the most popular wrestler as it’s protagonist. The problem is, the 2nd Mummy film cast this very same character as evil and horrible. Now this character is only good and everyone loves him. And that becomes the problem because it’s supposed to be a prequel and yet can’t live up to the plot it was given. It’s an entertaining film for sure and Kelly Hu looks stunning in her role. But don’t bother watching this hoping for any loyalty to its predecessors. It’s got some nice effects at times and yet at others made the action look quite unrealistic (see the guy being killed with bow and arrow at the beginning). If you have a chance to look at the deleted scenes, they cut anything that remotely had the sorceress foretelling of our assassin stopping Memnon which sorta makes the final theatrical plot a bit wishy-washy. He can have future told for everything but the man trying to kill him? At least the deleted scenes cured the problem…then found itself lying on the editing floor. Oh well. Even with it, the film still has issues.
