The Mummy 2: The Mummy Returns (2001)

- written February 2005

Rick O'Connell and Evelyn have settled down in London with their son after a career raiding Egyptian tombs. How, soon enough, their old nemesis Imhotep returns from the dead, resurrected by his reincarnated girlfriend. They need the help of “The Scorpion King,” a warrior forgotten by history to help them solve the secret to eternity but not if Rick can help it.

Overall: I really enjoyed the first film for the effects, for the acting and for Arnold Vosloo. This time we added a few more characters but none of that seemed to help. The kid was annoying, not just in character but overall. Great effects again but “The Rock” got way under-used in the film. Granted that prior to this film, he was all wrestling and no acting but frankly, after the first 5 minutes, never again is he human. The Balloon pilot was also annoying as was the attempts to connect Evie to Anuk-su-Namun. Nice sword fight but that was about it. Also, the could have eliminated the cheesy connection that Rick now has to some ancient Magi army. What made the first one fun was that it’s just about some gold-seekers but now, it’’s all about their destiny. It’s silly and that’s it. Just disappointing despite the hype.
