The Mummy (1932)

Sir Joseph Whemple and his team discover a 3000-year-old mummy named Imhotep, buried with a piece of parchment. An archeologist reads the ancient scroll aloud and goes mad when the creature awakens. When Whemple returns ten years later with his son, they meet Ardath Bey who helps them locate the hidden tomb of Princess Anck-es-en-Amon. But Bey is not just a local resident looking to rob graves but is instead the Mummy, reborn again. He plans to reincarnate his love interest until he realizes that her spirit rests in a woman, known to Joseph. And he knows if he can just get her under his spell, he can make her remember about their past. But the Whemples will step in to fight it…but is the Mummy too strong?

Overall: Although I loved Karloff’s performance as the Egyptian Mummy reborn, this film didn’t do much for me. The story was weak and no question the 1999 version explained much of what this film tried to imply. We see the mummy awaken then jump 10 years to see the mummy reborn, but get no explanation as to why or how this happened. Then we realize some lady possesses the spirit of the Mummy’s love-interest, with no real explanation about that either. The story isn’t very good and there’s a lot of plot issues. I think Karloff does a tremendous job and watching his performance might just be enough to get you to take the time to find it. But in the words of “American Idol’s Randy… “it’s just al-right dawg! It just didn’t do much for me.”
