Howling VII: New Moon Rising (1995)

- written October 2002

An Australian drifter comes to town to look for work and soon after he arrives, mysterious deaths start to crop up. The town comes to suspect the drifter and he will have to do everything to fight the true evil in the town!

Overall: Sounds a lot like part 6, huh? And yet despite all the country music songs (that are played to their entirety), this film at least is better than its predecessor. I think they play like 8 separate songs in the film, none of them very good and even the line-dancing looks terrible. But the film is clearly one of the better sequels out there for its loyalty. It integrates parts 4 & 5 better than most sequels can and by the end of the film, it’s like watching a Hercule Poirot film with its explanation of the murder mystery. The connections to Marie from Part 4, the tow-truck driver from part 4, Mary Lou and Ted from part 5 and the clowns from part 6 are integrated quite well. The movie is way too long at 90 minutes as the songs are more filler than actual story. What got me is how closely related the character of Ted is to Willie Nelson & the inspector is too political talk-show host Wally George. The inspector looks like he has exceeded retirement age already so his ability to keep “inspecting” is questionable. The acting isn’t very good at all and the film tries to be comedic, and isn’t very funny. But I gotta say it’s a nice ending…of sorts for the franchise.
