Regan is a normal 12-year-old girl, well that except for the fact she’s been acting weird lately. That weirdness turns into full out possession, as she gets possessed by a demon. Only one person can truly help her…Father Karras. And what he’s got in store for everyone is anything beyond what Hell can stand.
Overall: Well this is clearly the best or one of the best horror films of all time. I’ll rank this as the #1 film in terms of scariness in my book. It’s just a brilliant job all around with the story, the dialogue and if anything the explicitness of everything. The way the girl reacts under possession with her language, actions, etc. It’s just way too disturbing and way too real. Much of what everyone already knows makes it scarier...the fact they filmed the bedroom scenes using refrigeration so as to make the room look as cold as it actually was and the subliminal images to make everything that much scarier. Recently they released the “version you’ve never seen” which makes this film outright dangerous...the spider-walk scene plus the additional morphing of Regan’s face into a devilish face. No question that when this film was released, it was a national sensation and films like that have no doubt desensitized us to horror to the point that most films can’t even compare to the furor this movie caused. I’d say maybe “Blair Witch Project” has come closest to the outrage and terror this film produced because most horror films simply can’t scare you anymore. I think this movie still can. Go watch it, again. Comparison: Rosemary’s Baby meets Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde |
