- Tara Cardinal, lead actress of "Delivery," agreed to an interview. Anyone looking for more info on Ms. Cardinal or her films, can visit her IMDB page.
Q: Tara, can you explain how you first got into the movie business?
A: It started as a favor actually. I'd been doing theatre, and then working at the Renaissance Festival when a friend in film school asked if I would "star" in her film. I said yes, and LOVED it. After that I landed an agent, and kept booking Independent films. I've been doing that ever since.
Q: Please explain your role in “Delivery”.
A: Bibi is very much the catalyst for the action. Poor Monty is abused by every one he's ever met. He finally meets the one girl who sees the sweet, broken little boy inside him... and falls in love with him. We make an unlikely pair. Bibi has two brothers that she lives with after her parents die. One brother works to support them, and the other brother is just 13.
The older brother, Jimmy, is mean, abusive and controlling. When Bibi stands up to him, he takes it out on Monty. When Monty loses Bibi, he loses everything.
Q: Was there anything in your life related to or that you studied that could prepare you for your role?
A: I was always the pretty girl in school who was kind to everyone. I dated guys that my friends thought were um... not attractive... let's put it that way. But I always saw the sweetness in a guy, and looked past the appearance. As far as the particulars go, I did spend some time at a gun range learning to shoot. I didn't want to have a gun in my hands, pointed at a real human being, and not know the first thing about how to use it.
Q: Knowing how movie reviews may skew the perception of one’s product, give us in your own words what you want people to know about this film.
A: I think people should know that it's a slasher with a plot. The lead character is someone who could be real, and might be working at your local pizza parlour. Unlike a lot of B horror films, there aren't 4 Kids driving to their doom, and you have to earn the blood and guts. None of that instant gratification! Jose Cassella (writer, director) makes you work for it. Not until you've bonded with Monty do you get to feel his pain.
Q: If there were one part of the film that was more difficult than you expected, what would that be? Getting a costume to work? Appearing in a certain scene? Certain lines?
A: The one scene we shot in the trailer - it was ROUGH! I waited 6 hours before they called me, we had a very small crew, and the stench of the trailer was nauseating! There were... horrible things stashed In the trailer. It was inhabited by squatters... all sorts of nasty things, smelly things. The director put plastic down on the bed for us because it was just so horrible. I felt so dirty after that shoot. Then Matt and I were in the bed together. He was topless, I was covered by the cover - socks, shoes, everything. There was no way I was going to take anything off in there!
Q: Was there any one day, one moment where you just knew the film would work they way you thought it could?
A: Yes.. but I can't tell you because it ruins the ending! But...I will say that the scenes we shot right before I burst into tears, and the break up scene were just killer. They felt SO good.
Q: Since “Delivery” what have you been working on?
A: I did an art film called Genius - about an opera singer who walks the line between Genius and Insanity. I play the Genius. After that I hooked up with Dean Production Group and worked on The Rescuers trailer - it's based on true stories of civilians who rescue people from really, really bad situations. My character runs the office of operations - but not very well. I've also been working on an Indie film, Haunted, based on the true story of a woman who was abused as a child - the abuser is dead, and is now haunting her.
My latest project, Legend of the Red Reaper, is a fantasy film - Lord of the Rings meets Kill Bill. It is a revenge film, lots of blood and guts. We're on break from shooting right now - but you can see the trailer at www.redreaper.com . I play the Red Reaper aka Aella.
I've been working on stunt driving. I got to do a stunt driving pilot show. I'm not allowed to say too much about it, but I learned A LOT. I've been working on my 360s. One of these days you'll see me doing some fancy driving to go with my sword fighting and martial arts!
Q: What’s next for you? If you and I were to talk 1 year from today, what do you think would be on your plate at that time?
A: Hopefully a vacation! Or a television show. My Partner is out in LA right now pitching the Legend of the Red Reaper as a tv show. Wish us luck!
Q: Is there any director or actor you really want to work for one day? Someone that you look up to?
A: There is a list! Joss Whedon, Courtney Solomon And Steven Spielberg.
Q: You’ve appeared in a bunch of indie films and done some voiceover work, correct? So far from everything you have done, what do you want to keep working on?
A: I want to keep working in stunts and leading work. More challenging work.
Q: Anything you wish to add for my readers and visitors? Something special about you that they probably do not know?
A: I have a soft spot for the under dog. I think that shows through in a lot of the work that I do on screen. That caries over into my real life as well. For the last several years I've been working on humanitarian projects. I'm a spokesperson for the Tenderness Tour, and organization dedicated to ending child abuse. I co-founded a peer counseling group back in middle school for children who were abused. I now have a BS in psychology, and I'm looking for some local volunteer work. I'm always available for charity events, and I've always got something available to donate for a raffle!
Q: Finally...this is an “Obscure Horror Movie” website. Can you name the last horror movie you watched either at the theatres or on DVD, etc? How about name a favorite horror film that you have seen that most people probably haven’t seen?
A: The last horror film I saw... Does Sleeping with the Enemy count? I saw the Shinning just a few weeks go. I love Jack Nicholson.
I just saw a great horror/sci-fi that I'd never heard of, called the The Astronaut's Wife, with Johnny Depp and Charlize Theron - neither one of them looked like themselves. There were some very hot love scenes too!
Thank you very much for doing this.
It was my pleasure. Thanks for chatting with me!
