- Starina Johnson has appeared in a few movies, including "Stuck" and "Watch Out". Anyone looking for more info on Starina or her films, can visit her at her IMDB page or her myspace page.
Q: Ms. Starina, glad to have you back again. Without giving too much away for later questions, what have you been up to since we last talked (March 2009)?
A:
Well, I’ve been doing lots of short films and commercials and was involved in a WIP called Stuck! For those of you not up to date on your obscure initials that is a Women In Prison movie.
Q: Would you please explain your acting role in "Stuck”?
A:
I play Daisy. A virginal (stop laughing) young woman wrongly accused of murdering her mother and sentenced to hang.
Q: Knowing how movie reviews may skew the perception of one's product, give us in your own words what you want people to know about the film.
A: It’s more than just a WIP. In all honesty it’s quite moving. I finally got to see the movie at the London premiere and actually found myself sucked into the lives of the characters. There are also some pretty intense scenes.
Q: If there were one part of the filming that was more difficult than you expected, what would that be? Getting a costume to work? Appearing in a certain scene? Certain lines?
A: Steve tried to kill me by making all my emotional scenes take place the first four days of filming. Then the ballroom scene dress wanted to cause a wardrobe malfunction. It was REALLY hot where we were filming and we were all sweaty so of course the fabric wanted to remove itself.
Q: Was there any one day, one moment where you just knew the film would work they way you thought it could?
A: I think after Pleasant (Dutch in the film) went through her fourth pair of false eyelashes…in all seriousness, having worked with Steve before I completely trusted him. So I guess I always knew it would work.
Q: What’s it like working with Steve Balderson and how did you first meet him?
A: I love working with Steve. His sets are great and the food rocks! Food is the way to a woman’s heart, you know. We actually met because of Matt Riddlehoover and Myspace. I wish there was more to that story, people always expect some crazy wild “how we met” extravaganza, but it was really that simple. While we were in London for the premiere we started to make one up but I’ve forgotten it now.
Q: Tell me a little bit about some of the other films you’ve worked on. What was your role and any interesting stories or tidbits to share?
A:
1) Crossroads Cafe - I was actually helping out behind the scenes on this movie and somehow got placed as a character. It’s actually a Christian film. Anyone familiar with my work knows that fact is bizarre enough.
2) Absence With Pictures - This is one that I’ve been told is still in the editing phase. We shot it about two years ago and it’s a great story based on a play by Kendra Thomas (the director). It’s about the lives of four women who are affected by those they love being in Iraq. The play was pre Army Wives. I absolutely LOVED my character. She was a fucking mess. There is an entire scene where I ad-lib a drunken walk into the house and the entire crew couldn’t stop laughing. I was a bartender in college, so I’m pretty good at “acting” drunk, and I’m fairly certain most of my ad-libs were things I’ve actually said while intoxicated.
3) Bookends - Matt Riddlehoover. I’ve been in all Matt’s films in one way or another…I think all…if not all then most. He just kinda calls me and says when to be on set at this point. This was my first non-yelling character though LOL. Matt likes it when I get angry. :-P
Q: And I know the last time you told me of your love for theatre, what’s the first theatre production you had the lead role in, and how did you get the part?
A:
Probably more interesting than that would be my first time on stage (that I can remember). I had the solo in our kindergarden Christmas play. I sung Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. I was the only child that looked like I actually liked what I was doing. The pictures are pretty funny. I’ll have to include one.
Q: Looking at your resume, you’ve worked on a few commercials. What was your favorite appearance? How many of them are still running on tv? Do you ever get grief from friends or family?
A:
I get a lot of phone calls and texts from people saying “I just saw you” or “I just heard your voice”. It’s actually really funny. I’ve done a couple Krystal commercials that I still get residual checks from…those are always nice. Plus they were a lot of fun. Actually, when I found out about the Krystal commercial, I had to call Matt Riddlehoover because Krystal is a running joke with us. We celebrated by going there.
Q: What else is next for you? Can you tell me what you have going on in 2009 and into 2010?
A: I’m still waiting on Annie Duke to stop being a chicken shit and take me up on my poker challenge. I’d like to make a true slasher film. I think that would be super fun. I’d also like to clean out my closet…ALSO I was in a reality tv show pilot (stop laughing) called the 48-Hour Film Showdown. It is based on the 48-hour film festivals held annually around the country. This was like a 48-hour film festival on crack. Only five of us, we had to do everything, and none of us really knew one another. Actually, I knew director Craig Ciali really well, but Chad Morgan and Joel Wilson (Nashville 9) were fairly new to us, and none of us knew James Thayer. It will air November 11that 8PM EST on the Halogen Network. I’m either going to look like a banshee or an idiot depending on how Tristan Higgs edited it LOL. I’ve come to conclude the reason reality tv people always look like they’re hostile is because when they show the fights you never see the build-up, just the screaming and the aftermath. When making a movie in 48-hours there is obviously A LOT of that LOL.
Q: Is there anything new you wish to add for my readers and visitors?
A: I’ve had two birds fly into my house recently…it’s starting to freak me out. Oh, and I think the women of Stuck! should be in Maxim magazine, so go to this link and demand us at the “suggest a babe” tag!!! http://www.maxim.com/contact.html
Q: Thank you very much for doing this.
A:
You are always more than welcome!

Starina's Questions for Rich Wolf:
Q: So, Mr. Wolf, what brought you into this crazy world of horror movies?
A: When I was younger, I always got confused with horror sequels and their chronology and felt there needed to be a place everyone could go to put everything into perspective. So I created my site. I think my site itself spawned an increased interest in my horror movies!
Q: If you were trapped on a desert island with only one movie (of any genre) to watch, what would it be?
A: Hmmm...frankly I'm a huge fan of "Ravenous." The plot, time-frame and even the music. It's bloody but it's just such a must-see for everyone!!!
Q: Let’s say you had to kill someone by using your favorite horror movie death, what would that death be?
A: I'm partial to "Friday the 13th Part 7" where Jason swings his victim, in a sleeping bag, into a tree like a baseball bat. So outrageous but so fascinating!!!
Q: What is the first horror movie you remember viewing?
A: I think it was Vincent's Price's "House of Wax." My dad would have had that on. First scary one is probably not even an actual scary movie but I saw it when they would still scare me: John Carpenter's "Prince of Darkness." Freaked me out back in the day!
Q: Favorite horror movie quote?
A: Oh my god...tons, tons. But I'll go with George Clooney from "From Dusk till Dawn" when referring to the vampires and his friend thinking they were just merely insane: Did they look like psychos? Is that what they looked like? They were vampires. Psychos do not explode when sunlight hits them, I don't give a fuck how crazy they are.
Q: Who is the person you’ve most enjoyed interviewing? (Cough*me*Cough) :-P
A: Hmmm...well there is this gorgeous funny woman named Starina...Oh that's you. :) Always an honest answer, always funny, and a great actress too!!
My 2nd place would be Ron Perlman from "Hellboy." In the face of me questioning some of his really cheesy roles...he at least answered honestly, despite the fact he seemed embarrassed by me bringing them up.
Q: Any side projects you’ve been working on besides the Obscure Horror Page?
A: Just the page and it's variations throughout the social media universe: Twitter, FaceBook and MySpace. I would one day like to find a way to make more $$ doing this however so any suggestions are always welcome!
Q: Thank you for letting me ask you questions!
A: Of course. Anytime, and for everyone out there...go find this woman's films. She's truly a pleasure to watch onscreen!
