Sil isn't just a good experiment gone bad - she's an alien who can’t stop killing. Just recently a new alien species got beamed down to earth and ever since, the government has been splicing its DNA and ours to see what would happen. Well the result is a young girl who is growing at an exponential rate and whose sole purpose is to multiply. To do so, she must find the right man. Meanwhile the government realizes she has super-human strength and the cunning of a wolf. If they don't stop her, the nation will soon be over-run with alien creatures masquerading as beautiful females. The closer they get to Sil, the nearer she is to giving birth. For 5,000 years, man has been the dominant species - every record is made to be broken.
Overall: Natasha Henstridge steals the film in her first movie role. Despite the big-time names of her co-stars, she put together a nice acted performance. And the fact she’s nice to look at, didn’t hurt. If anything, looking back I find Ben Kingsley almost under-utilized. Enjoyed his role but many times his dialogue consisted of one & two word phrases. Oct 2005: The Species Box Set was just released and I took the time to make the purchase. Included is an “alternate ending” (better termed as an “extended ending”) which follows Press & Laura in their relationship as they have some ice-cream. No real action but instead a further discussion of the “next experiment” involving the aliens. Good cut actually. Comparison: FemAlien meets any John Saul book |
