Interview with Ron Perlman

- Ron Perlman has appeared in a many many movies, including "Hellboy" series and now "Mutant Chronicles." Anyone looking for more info on Ron or his films, can visit his at his IMDB page.

Q: Mr. Perlman, can you explain how you first got into the movie business?

A: I started with an audition as a cave-man. It was a cattle-call for “Quest for Fire.” Basically they wee looking for geeks, like in a traveling circus. The scope and breadth of humanity there was amazing. The director brought every freak he could find for the roles.

Q: Would you please explain your acting role in "Mutant Chronicles."

A:I play “Brother Samuel.” Brother Samuel is a monk who presides over a very obscure order of monks in a very remote mountain-top monastery. Their main purpose is to protect and preserve these chronicles which refer back to an attack upon human kind a thousand years earlier with the intent of annihilating the human by some diabolical force that turned all mankind into mutants. And the chronicles are something that had been set down by the warrior prophet Naftan to talk about what the intention and purpose of this enemy was and how he neutralized them in case they reappear. And so of course in this movie they do reappear and this is what animates and sets in motion all of the movements and administrations of Brother Samuel.”

Q: Knowing how movie reviews may skew the perception of one's product, give us in your own words what you want people to know about the film.

A: Give it a fair shot. It’s a smart film and I adore the filmmaker. He’s a new voice and deserves everyone’s attention. His heart is always in the right place. I think there’s a huge amount of value on the screen and I think that his style is as sophisticated and as well-honed as almost anyone I’d ever worked with before. I’m very proud of the film.

Q: If there were one part of the filming that was more difficult than you expected, what would that be? Getting a costume to work? Appearing in a certain scene? Certain lines?

A: Nothing was too difficult. However the single most unique part of the film was the green-screen. It was most green-screen ever for a film I’ve appeared in. It’s 400 years in the future and much of it was made in post-production.

Q: Looking back, I see that you’ve also appeared in other films”. Can you tell me a little about each film and your experience with it? Let's start with "Blade 2"?

A: It was my 2nd romp with Guillermo del Toro. It was a delight to be on set. We filmed it in Prague and I loved that city. I have the fondest of memories for that experience. There was nothing to my character when I got there but it grew and grew each day. The film is eminently watchable and I think it served notice to the world of such a class filmmaker.

Q: How about "Five Girls"?

          A: (Laughs) Why?

Q:I review obscure movies and I’ve seen it and wanted to know a little about it.

Why? Well, I needed the gig. I needed the gig, man. Took anything I could.

Q: How about "Alien 4: Resurrection”?

A: Well you’re working with a very formulaic franchise. But I was good friends with the cast. We had a good time and it was a very delicious reunion. I enjoyed working with Jean-Pierre Jeunet who is a maverick and very independent. He did such great films such as “City of Lost Children,” and “Delicatassen”. Great time overall.

Q: Finally...this is an "Obscure Horror Movie" website. Can you name the last horror movie you watched either at the theatres or on dvd, etc? How about name a favorite horror film that you have seen that most people probably haven't seen?

A: “I Sell the Dead” is the last one I’ve seen and that’s because I’m in it. Glenn McQuaid did an excellent job as director of the film. You have to admire his point of view and utilization of the genre.

My favorite movies would have to be the original “Day the Earth Stood Still” as well as the original “The Thing.”

Q: Thank you very much for doing this.

- END -
