- Robert Noel Gifford is the director of several movies, including "No Strings 2: Playtime in Hell". Anyone looking for more info on Robert or his films, can visit him at his website and also at his IMDB page.
Q: Robert, can you explain how you first got into the movie business?
A: Well I have been making horror films since 2005, before that I was a singer in a few different Heavy Metal bands. I went to school for fiber optics communications and I am an advanced laser technician , OK that is my geek side and Sci Fi side, but come on who did not want to be a captain of a Starship growing up (LOL). I have been writing short stories and songs since I was in high school, so writing scripts came very naturally to me. I decided to form my own independent film company back in 2005 and like all parts of my life I gave it my all. Many of my older films have been sold out and are no longer available, guess people liked them (LOL) Since starting ROBERT NOEL GIFFORD films® back in 2005 I have made wonderful friends and worked with some of the greatest names in independent horror and continue to this day doing the same.
Q: And how did you get into the movie business?
A:
I made my very first little 10 minute horror film SOUTH OF HEAVEN with Suzi Lorraine many years ago and after that just knew this was something I wanted to do with my life and no that film is not available for sale, sorry, in truth I have no idea where the original copy even is anymore.
Q: Knowing how movie reviews may skew the perception of one's product, give us in your own words what you want people to know about the film: "No Strings 2: Playtime in Hell".
A: This is such a great question and thank you for asking it, because it is so truth. I guess the one thing I want people to know about NO STRINGS 2 (playtime in HELL) is that creative horror films are not dead. By that I mean so so many films released today are the same old crap and even worse the dreaded remake of a classic. So I guess if I wanted to rely any message about this film is it is original and twisted with it’s own originality.
Q: When did you first create the idea to do “No Strings 2: Playtime in Hell”? And what can we expect different than in the first film?
A:
I first came up with the idea to make this film while I was editing one day. The clown doll puppet ( Larry ) was sitting on the props shelf and I just happened to look up at it and the way the sunlight was hitting it’s face made the doll even more sinister looking then ever. I thought at that very moment what a great movie I could do with the doll again and with that single thought came the second film. I never think twice when I come up with an idea, I just begin hammering out a script and begin casting. This film is almost a completely different film then the first NO STRINGS. The budget was bigger and a much bigger cast. The first film was an experiment in sorts on making a doll film. I did get to work with and become friends with PLAYBOY CENTERFOLD legend Cathy St. George who starred in the first film, but NO STRINGS 2 is as I said a completely different film then the first.
Q: If there were one part of the film that was more difficult than you expected, what would that be? Getting a costume to work? Certain scenes? Certain lines?
A: I think the most difficult scene in the movie to date was the doll’s masturbation scene (LOL) I told you this film was twisted (LOL) I had written this into the script but then removed it because the actress who was to be part was not comfortable with it, but then I added it in again when Julie Anne accepted to do the scene. Well the scene calls for the doll to begin masturbating next to Julie Anne who is sleeping at the time. The reason the scene was so difficult was because everyone on set could not stop laughing. It was just so funny. My assistant director Jacquelyn was laughing so hard she was in tears. Ted who was working the doll was killing us with what he was doing. My stomach is still hurting today from laughing so hard.
Q: Was there any one day, one moment where you just knew the film would work the way you thought it could?
A: In truth I knew this film would be a winner when I saw my cast. They are the best and most talented people any director can be blessed to work with. They rock……………….
Q: Can you tell me a little bit about Damien Colletti. What does he bring to the set that helps make this film work?
A:
Damien is the man. Anyone who has seen my past films knows I cast mostly female actors in almost all the main roles. I started casting in my last film male actors in main parts. In my film “THE WISHING BOX” I cast LA GUNS front man Phil Lewis in a main role and he kicked ass. So when I was writing “NO STRINGS 2“, I wanted to add in a male lead again but could not think of the perfect person. Then I began communicating with Damien and knew I found the perfect actor to fill that role in the film. Damien I feel brings to any part he takes such intensity and passion. He is old school acting. By that I mean he brings the tough guy back to movies with a realism to the part. He is also a great to work with, very easy going and easy to get along with. I look forward to working with him in more of my films in the future.
Q: I saw that you have a fantastic set of actresses in your film. How was the experience working with them. Have you worked with some of them previously?
A:
Yep, that is the turth, I have the most talented and beautiful actresses in the biz. Working with them was as close to Heaven as any one man can ever get. I have worked with Anju McIntyre on 2 of my other films, “OF DARKNESS” and “THE WISHING BOX“. Anju who just did a fantastic interview and pictorial in PENTHOUSE is so wonderful to work with. She is a 100% pro on screen and so funny off the set. Another absolutely wonderful actress is Jacquelyn Velvets. Jacquelyn is not just an actress in the film but also my asst. director and asst. DP. She is so talented and gifted in front and behind the camera. Without Jacquelyn at my side with production I tell you the truth I would never have been able to have made this film. I also have worked with Anne Ferrari before in “THE WISHING BOX” and she is so talented and also very easy going and a dream to work with. This film also star’s PLAYBOY CENTERFOLD and TV and film star Max Wasa. Only one word can explain Max, PERFECTION. I am working with Max on another film “FRAGMENTS OF SHADOW” where Max will play RETEP a warrior angel sent to stop the end of days. This was the first film I worked with Julie Anne and found her beyond a pleasure to work with, she is such a talented actress. This film also stars Monique Dupree who is a powerhouse of talent and so funny off camera and also starring is Zoe Vargas, Vania Bezerra who I worked with in my film “THE WISHING BOX” and Meredith Otten who also star’s in “THE WISHING BOX”. Everyone I have worked with are the best in the biz and treasures to work with.
Q: I see you’ve also created “Dead Dolls.” Can you tell me a little bit about this film?
A:
It’s funny about “DEAD DOLLS” because the little creeper doll I use in that film was originally the doll that was for “NO STRINGS“. But the doll was to small to do what was called for in the script, so on the shelf he went. But then 2 years ago I started a little film called “THE DEAD HOUR” a collection of short horror films. So looking on my props shelf’s I saw the little creeper and that was all there was, out came “DEAD DOLLS” one of the short films for the upcoming “THE DEAD HOUR” movie. The film stars Suzi Lorraine, Darian Caine, Kylee Nash, Kerri Talyor, and Jacquelyn Velvets. It is about a loser who is pushed to far by women that he makes a deal with the Devil to get revenge. The Devil gives him the power to give these little ugly dolls life so they can go and kill every woman that has made fun of him and turned him down. So it is somewhat a twisted love story (LOL) just kidding, just another strange and twisted horror film from my mind : ) “THE DEAD HOUR” will be released in 2011 just incase anyone was going to ask.
Q: And how about “Of Darkness”?
A: This is another short film created for “THE DEAD HOUR” collection. This film is a somewhat remake of a short film I did with Suzi back in 2006 called “SOMETHING EVIL” that film was premiered in Italy at the SANTENA CORTO FILM FESTIVAL. So I revamped the script and remade the short. The film star’s Suzi Lorraine, Kylee Nash, Anju McIntyre, Jacquelyn Velvets, Brittany Wilson, Jesseac Recek and myself as the demonic killer JERRY KEEP. I love to play the monsters in some of my films (LOL)
Q: What’s next for you? If you and I were to talk 1 year from today, what do you think would be on your plate at that time?
A: I say a year from now we will be talking about the newest film to date. As I said I never stop working, but I would love to say I won a SCREAM AWARD, that would be best and rock……… and it is a definite maybe : )
Q: Is there any particular actor/actress that you want to work with that you have not yet found an instance to do so?
A: I think I just want to work with everyone (LOL) but if there is one I could name right off the top of my mind it would be the great BRINKE STEVENS.
Q: For any aspiring filmmakers out there who want to create their own work, what advice can you give them? Anything they need to avoid? Anything that they must know about?
A:
I think the best advice I could give to any aspiring filmmakers is make sure you leave you personal feelings at the door and get a thick skin. Because this as I have discovered is a business that people will do what is best for them. So do not get upset if something does not go your way or someone turns down a role in your film. Remember that nothing is ever personal it is just business, let things roll right off your back and move on. Always have your understudies on hand, that is the biggest MUST DO. I cannot say enough. Because actors are human and may get sick or have to cancel do to a personal problem so have those understudies and save yourself a huge headache. And great lighting is also a biggie, if your lighting sucks, then your film will suffer greatly and last but not least, make sure your audio is rocking. I do all my own mixing because of my past experience with working sound boards, but if you don’t have that experience get yourself a great sound person.
Q: What are your aspirations and goals in the movie industry? Box Office blockbusters? Films that anyone can watch? Something else?
A:
My aspirations are simple, just to continue to work with the best people in the biz and continue to make films people will enjoy. Who knows maybe one day I can make that Viking film I have always wanted to make.
Q: Can you name a film that my visitors probably haven’t seen, that you think has either been an influence in your work or just feel is a “can’t miss” film?
A: My work has been influenced by so many films. But one film that has always had a huge impact on my love of FX effects is “THEM” it is an old film from the 50’s but to me it was the best giant insect movie ever made. LOVE IT
Q: Anything you wish to add for my readers and visitors? Something special about you that they probably do not know?
A:
I guess I would like to say thank you to your readers and visitors for taking the time to read this interview and I hope I can continue to make films they will enjoy.
Q: Thank you very much for doing this.
