Interview with Rick Dawson

- written December 28th, 2010

- Rick Dawson is the executive producer/writer of "AntiPeople." Anyone looking for more info on Rick or his films, can visit him at his IMDB page or his website.

Q: Can you please give my readers a brief background on yourself?

A: My name is Rick Dawson and I am an Actor/Writer. I’ve mainly worked on independent films and some mid-level web series.

Q: And how did you get into the movie business?

A: While in College, before I “came out of my shell”, I was an extremely shy guy. My good friend Alex Vega talked me into acting in some of his shorts for his film program. Something went terribly wrong… apparently (to the untrained eye) I was decent at acting, so a lot of the students in Alex’s film program started putting me in their short films.

Two months into it, I got cast in a feature called Point of Violence… and I’ve been floating by ever since.

Q: Knowing how movie reviews may skew the perception of one’s product, give us in your own words what you want people to know about your newest film “Anti People.”

A: With Anti People, I wanted to give the viewer JUST ENOUGH information about the characters, and I wanted to show that there was no clear Protagonist or Antagonist… what I would like the viewer to do is take in all of the information and choose which brother (either George or Marcus) is the antagonist.

Q: When did you first create the idea to do “Anti People”?

A: Just after boot camp, I went through a pretty bad break up, which not only led to me losing my fiancé, but my best friend as well. To help cope with it, I wrote a feature length film entitled “Anti People”.

Q: If there were one part of the filming that was more difficult than you expected, what would that be? Getting a costume to work? Appearing in a certain scene? Certain lines?

A: Honestly, in pre-production we had some difficulties in people dropping out at the last minute, but I’m glad that it turned out the way that it did because we wound up getting an amazing crew.

During the actual production process, everything went by VERY SMOOTHLY. Darrin Mangan (the director) knew exactly what he wanted and did an awesome manning the helm and getting everything that we needed during the day, John Frost (the Director of Photography) did an incredible job in getting us some awesome shots, and everyone else on the Crew did a fantastic job and I would strongly recommend them to anyone.

Also the cast did an incredible job. Sarah Agor, Joseph Reiman, and Bo Barrett all did an awesome job and the film wouldn’t have been half as good without them.

Q: Was there any one day, one moment where you just knew the film would work they way you thought it could?

A: From the very first shot, I was very happy with how everything was coming together. The film turned out slightly different then I had originally intended, but I am very happy with how the film turned out overall.

Q: Tell me a little about the actors and actresses in the film. How did you choose them and did they meet your expectations when the film was all done?

A: Joseph Reitman is probably one of the most talented actors I’ve ever met. Darin Mangan showed me a couple of potential headshots and he showed me Joseph’s Headshot and after that I couldn’t see anyone other than him playing the role of Marcus. Marcus exceeded any of our expectations.

Sarah Agor is an incredibly talented actress and I chose her in a similar way that I chose Joseph. She looked 99% of how I saw the Anali character and she exceeded all of our expectations.

Bo Barrett is an extremely funny guy and we needed someone who could be both funny and dramatic for the John character. He also exceeded all of our expectations.

Q: Tell me a little bit about NitroBlitz Productions. How did you come to be a part of it?

A: Nitroblitz Productions is my film company. It started off as a blogging website called Nitroblitz.com it at one point averaged about 10,000 hits per day, but after a while it slowly turned into a film production company.

Q: What other films are you working on?

A: Currently, I am in Post-Production status on NitroBlitz Productions first feature film, Tetherball (featuring Ron Jeremy and Dustin Diamond)… The film should be completed sometime in May.

I am going to be working on the Mulva: Zombie Ass Kicker remake.

Plus I got some other projects, unfortunately I can’t talk about them at this time.

Q: What’s next for you? If you and I were to talk 1 year from today, what do you think would be on your plate at that time?

A: Next year, I’ll probably be working on NitroBlitz Productions 2nd possibly 3rd feature length film.

Q: Is there any particular actor/actress that you want to work with that you have not yet found an instance to do so?

A: There are a couple of actors/actresses on the wish list, but for the time being I’m pretty content with the actors/actresses that I’ve had the privilege of working with.

Q: For any aspiring filmmakers out there who want to create their own work, what advice can you give them? Anything they need to avoid? Anything that they must know about?

A: Honestly, with your first film… less is more. Try creating your project around minimal locations (that you have access to) and minimal actors/actresses.

Nothing is worse than having bad sound, hire your sound guy first.

Q: Can you name a film that my visitors probably haven’t seen, that you think has either been an influence in your work or just feel is a “can’t miss” film?

A: Honestly, all of the movies that influenced me are movies that your viewers have already seen. The movies that influenced me were The Toxic Avenger, The Evil Dead, and Old Boy.

Q: Anything you wish to add for my readers and visitors? Something special about you that they probably do not know?

A: Be sure to check out my website at http://rickdawson.tk and I’m a friendly guy… go ahead and add me on Facebook.

Q: Thank you very much for doing this.
