Interview with Rachel Knutton

- written October 8th, 2008

- Rachel Knutton is the star of many movies, including "Splatter Disco" and "Beyond the Dunwich Horror." Anyone looking for more info on Rachel or her films, can visit her at her IMDB page or her official website.

Q: Ms. Knutton, can you explain how you first got into the movie business?

A: Growing up I was always interested in Drama. My seventh grade Drama teacher Mrs. Edwards was great. She inspired me to continue my pursuit of the dramatic arts. I enjoyed doing High school Theater very much. Playing Cinderella was definitely the highlight. In fact, I used to read every play book in the school library before bed. I put all that on hold however to start a family and didn't pick it up again for many years. In about 2000 I began to seek out acting projects once again when RI began inviting Hollywood projects with more frequency.

Q: Can you please tell me a little bit about your film "Beyond the Dunwich Horror?"

A: The modern adaptation of this HP Lovecraft Classic short story was really one of the most fun and interesting projects I was lucky enough to be a part of. Richard Griffin is a brilliant film maker and a great friend. I learned a lot from him as always about what makes great horror. I worked in the Medical field for almost 20 years so it was fun playing a similar role in a scary scene.

Q: Knowing how movie reviews may skew the perception of one's product, give us in your own words what you want people to know about this film.

A: I would like people to know that most everyone on the cast and crew worked on this film for love of the craft. Ha! Excuse the pun. The dedication and professionalism on set was really class A. I encourage people to go and see this film if they like the classic horror, they'll love it. It has great suspense, Lots of gore, and great little bits of humor peppered in there too. I think when I saw it the second time it was even better. I can't wait to get it into my home collection!

It will be screening at the Two Boots Theater in NYC this month! www.twoboots.com/pioneer

Q: If there were one part of the film that was more difficult than you expected, what would that be? Getting a costume to work? Appearing in a certain scene? Certain lines?

A: Actually I can't think of anything difficult about working on Beyond Dunwich Horror at all. I only had a few lines and the shoot was a breeze. Shooting at the Ocean was a little cold but even that was super fun. The hardest thing was waiting for post production. I couldn't wait to see the final cut! Richard Griffin makes it easy. This film is coming out on DVD this coming week Oct 15th. There's a big release party on Oct 10th at The Gallery Nightclub in Providence, RI. So for all you Local horror buffs come out and meet the cast! The film will be available for purchase on myspace.com Oct 15th. It's got lots of extras and fun stuff inside. You can find it at www.myspace.com/graveyardrotthemovie

Q: Can you tell us a little bit about "Splatter Disco"? What attracted you to the movie?

A: Splatter Disco was a great project. I was referred to it by Caleb Emerson from Die You Zombie Bastards! It was my first film after not working for a few years after an accident that I had in 2003. I was a bit nervous coming back but I am so glad I signed on with that project. Working with Ken Foree was a blast. He's a real gem both on camera and off. Splatter Disco will be screening at Rock N Shock this month Oct. 12. www.rockandshock.com

Q: Looking back, I see that you've also appeared in a few other films. Can you tell me a little bit about each one? Your role? An interesting story? First, "27 Dresses,"

A: I played two extra roles on 27 Dresses. I was the shop girl in the shopping for gifts scene and a guest at the final wedding. It was really great working with Kathrine Heigel she's a peach. I played a blonde and a brunette. It was my first feature film so it was pretty special. Going to see it with my family was a dream come true for me.

Story? Ok here's one. On the final wedding shoot. I bought a dress to wear at Walgreens Pharmacy of all places. It was beautiful kind of Marilyn Monroe type {from the breeze upskirt} We were all sitting there waiting to start in place on the beach in seats. Someone complimented me on the dress and asked where did I get it? The woman was elegant, older, well dressed. By this time people had turned to see my dress so I had an audience. I answered honestly "Walgreens" Well the look on her face was priceless. Several people stared in disbelief. It was pretty funny. They all wanted to know which Walgreens.

Q: How about "Diabolical Tales: Parts 1, 2 and 3,"?

A: Diabolical Tales 1 was my first film. I auditioned for a part as a villain but I was offered the Kate Cooper part and I took it. I am so glad for the casting instinct of Brandon Kane the films creator. It was a small part in part 1 but the role increased as they progressed and this allowed me to really get into the character. I was encouraged to make suggestions and tweak it a bit. So by the end I really felt like it was a nice fit.

In part 2 the role got a little bigger and I got to do a great monologue. My character developed a little more into a major character. I was playing a very troubled woman and began to spiral out of control so that was really fun.

Part 3 was the best of all. Kate Cooper developed into a major role. Her adventure continues with lots of action. Cat fights, Kidnapping and a vodka induced trip to paranoiaville.

Kate Cooper is quite a character. She's got great range and emotions. She's funny. I think I enjoyed that role the most of any I've done. Kate Cooper has her own IMDB I think that's pretty neat! I learned so much from Brandon and we've been great friends ever since. I'd love to work with him again. For the past two years Diabolical Tales has screened at Shockerfest in Modesto, CA. This year they'll be screening Diabolical Tales 3. I attended the past two years but unfortunately will be unable to attend this year. It plays on Oct. 4th.

These films are great science fiction schlock and can be found at www.cosmiccontrol.com.

Q: Are there certain films you enjoy doing? You've appeared in some films with some horror elements in them but but also it appears like you're just out to have some fun. What do you look for when picking films?

A: I do love the horror very much but I basically work on anything I can fit into my schedule. I'm open to any roles I can learn from and grow as an actor. I'd love to do some historical period work as I really have an interest and love the productions of those long past eras. I'd also like to do some work on a crime drama some day those are great. I think actors like to work on projects they enjoy watching. I also want to do more socially conscious films like documentaries.

Q: What projects have you been working on recently?

A: "Tanner Hall" was filmed in my home town of West Greenwich, Rhode Island. It's due out sometime early next year. I'm a fairgoer at a winter carnival. That was fun to do. Although I was just background I enjoyed it very much.

"Mall Cop" with Kevin James Should be out next year as well. Great comedy done by Mr. James I really enjoyed working on a comedy. Comedy is quite different from horror. I recently worked on "Zombie Allegiance" written and directed Tony Nunes. I play two characters here too. I also have a really cool sex scene. Hubba Hubba! www.myspace.com/zombieallegiance press: http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=156341157&blogID=429529160

Q: What's next for you? If you and I were to talk 1 year from today, what do you think would be on your plate at that time?

A: My goal looking into the future is working on more features and maybe getting on some of the series' that are coming to New England. I'd really love to get on the Brotherhood. I've been trying for over a year. I had a couple of chances to do it but scheduling conflicts keep thwarting my efforts. I'm really not interested in getting in the union at this time because it limits the independent projects and I really love those. I'm hoping to work with Richard Griffin again and also Tony Nunes again. Both extremely talented men.

Q: Is there any movie director or producer you really want to work for one day?

A: Mel Gibson is shooting a film here in the Boston area this fall. I'm trying to get on that set. Last week I got a call for it but it was last minute and I couldn't swing it. I really admire his work. "Passion of the Christ" was one of my all time favorites. I'd love to work with Clint Eastwood {of course} and Rob Zombie. I just finally saw "The Devils Rejects," Watching Ken Foree was kind of surreal. I was like hey my friend! I'm still a bit surprised at things like seeing myself on the big screen with an audience and watching actors I've worked with after I work with them.

Q: Anything you wish to add for my readers and visitors? Something special about you that they probably do not know?

A: Hmmm Well I'm getting Married Sunday! That's pretty special to me. My husband is ultra supportive of my work and for that I am very grateful. We're having a Big Medieval wedding. It's somewhat of a production starring me!

Q: Finally...this is an "Obscure Horror Movie" website. Can you name the last horror movie you watched either at the theatres or on dvd, etc? How about name a favorite horror film that you have seen that most people probably haven't seen?

A: Well Rich I'm glad you asked! I watched "Frankenstein." The Mary Shelley version with Robert De Niro, It really stuck with me. It was chair gripping scary! Brutal actually.

There was another film I watched the same night that was really bizarre. Roman Polanski's "Repulsion," starring Catherine Deneuve. Weird 60's horror , but I bet most people haven't seen it.

And "2001 Maniacs" another obscure horror goody!

One more: "The Misled Romance of Cannibal Girl and Incest Boy." By Richard Taylor. Mr. Taylor is a very talented film maker and I enjoy all his work. Check him out on www.myspace.com/richardbizjacktaylor

Q: Thank you very much for doing this.

A: Rich thank you so much for showcasing my work! It was an absolute pleasure doing the interview!

Thank you Ms. Knutton very much for doing this.
