Puppet Master vs. Demonic Toys (2004)

Robert Toulon and his daughter Alexandra have brought back the puppets of Robert's great great uncle, Andre. But when Christmas draws near, a toy company named Sharpe Industries has made a deal with a demon. They are trying to sell a number of vicious killer toys set to awaken Christmas morning, after they’ve stolen the secret to toy life from Robert. But kidnapping and murder won’t get in the way of Six-Shooter and the other Toulon Puppets.

Overall: I was never a big “Demonic Toy” or “Dollman” fan so this film caught my eye only because it was the 9th film in the “Puppet Master” series. Part 8 really did all it could to end the series once and for all but finally after 10 years, the Full Moon company finally got around to the film they always wanted to make. Much of the problem for this film is it doesn’t recap any of the prior films in either series. In addition, the puppets really don’t play big enough roles for a “versus” film. I will say that of all the “vs” films, so far, “Freddy vs. Jason” works because the 2 characters had something to do throughout almost every scene. Here the puppets and toys don’t battle until about 5 minutes to go. Without giving much away, a fan of one of the series will be disappointed because their “characters” won’t do much winning at all.

As for the acting, I really can’t believe Corey Feldman has gotten this bad. I mean he really isn’t very good at all. Outside of the fact he’s really 33 years old (12/31/04) when the film got made and his “daughter” looks about 15, I might buy that he’s old enough to have such a daughter but not have gray hair too. It’s an abysmal performance by some guy where drugs truly have sapped whatever talent he once had. I will say that at least everyone else (outside of the pathetic actor playing the demon), wasn’t that bad.

In terms of the “Puppet Master” series we have 4 puppets, all of whom get “upgrades” into “Cyber” form. No real need was shown to have done that, other than to mess with the series...and not in a good way. The film lends nothing to either series really except to capitalize on the commercialism of the “vs.” movies in production. Only reason to truly catch this film as if you have seen all the others…if this was going to be (or was) your first film into the series, then either empty your bank account to find all the other films or quit while you are ahead.
