Puppet Master 3: Toulon’s Revenge (1991)

- written August 2000

It is 1941 and Berlin, Germany where Andre Toulon is holding his puppet shows. A Nazi solider, an apprentice puppet maker, watches on and realizes the puppets move by themselves. It is then that the Nazi War Machine and in particular Major Krauss decide to steal Andre’s secret. But the love of puppets by one young boy, Peter, helps Andre have the strength to fight on. While being pursued through Berlin, Andre and his puppets wage a war of blood. Major Krauss will do anything to discover the secret in order to bring the dead German soldiers back to life and win World War II.

Overall: Ok, let us start with the obvious. Toulon died in 1939 in California in part 1. As a result he could not be present in Germany 2 years later! Major error in story here. To top all this off, it starts the musical chairs by the puppets. Leech Woman (Ilsa) died in part 2 but appears in part 3 as her human body is killed and she is re-created into the puppet (makes sense time-wise but not if this is a sequel!) Six-shooter appears for the first time (see video below), but wasn’t in part 2 (considering time-wise it took place after this film). Torch who appears in part 2 also wasn’t in this film. The story on the puppets is also embellished to make the fact that each puppet contains the spirit of a German person. Ilsa is Leech Woman, and Blade resembles Major Krauss (despite the fact that Krauss and Toulon didn’t know each other when the puppets were made). Film is trying to make sense for future films but fails miserably on loyalty to previous storylines. And this is the 3rd Toulon in 3 films. I think they could have made the film using 1938 as the Nazi’s were still powerful, show Hitler as ingenious with idea to animate dead soldiers or people in an effort to turn dead enemy soldiers into loyal zombies. Could have worked.

Comparison: Saving Private Ryan meets Ewoks
