Open Water (2004)

- written August 2004

Susan and Daniel are on a nice vacation together trying to get away from the big city and all the distractions. They take a short scuba diving excursion but when they drift away from the boat, they get left behind. Now they’ll have to rely on what they’ve learned in life to survive this harrowing adventure. And there are a few dangerous creatures who won’t make this an easy journey.

Overall: I saw this a few weeks before it debuted and I was really looking forward to it. It’s not a perfect film and really could have been much, much better.

Let’s start with the bad:
1) They don’t spend enough time convincing the audience that the tour operators really couldn’t have done more or really were that incompetent. Once you see the tour reach the shore without our 2 protagonists, you don’t see much again for about 40 more minutes. I think you needed more cutaways to take away from the fact we knew where the film was going.

2) The sound effects weren’t scary enough – I mean that a couple scenes have scary music and nothing to back it up and other times we’ve got scary stuff and no music to accompany it.

3) In addition, I just thought the shark scenes were just a bit too much – not that I don’t buy the idea that these are shark infested waters but that the last 40 minutes basically was our 2 compatriots and sharks...over and over and over again. The additions of the “cleaner” fish was fine – no, they weren’t piranha…but it basically wasn’t enough variety for me.

4) The fact is, the film is approximately 80 minutes long…and after the 11 minute mark, the couple is on the boat off to their journey. The deleted scenes actually comprise almost all “pre-departure” scenes. 6 of the 7 are about the couple in the hotel, on the beach, at the pool, etc. I’ll back up that none of these scenes really help the story along…the story focuses on their ocean ordeal but it gives you a little more filler before the true action starts. Not necessary to the script, I could have bought a few of those scenes been added, if only to increase the length and set up more of their relationship. The walk on the beach discussing weddings would have been good addition.

5) You’ll probably never see me say/type this again...the nudity was unnecessary. I applaud Blanchard (Susan) for doing the bedroom scene in the nude...she’s nice to look at…but her being clothed or not clothed adds nothing to the film or the plot. In fact, it seems so out of place given the atmosphere of the film before and after...

The Good:
1) The decision not to use the “alternate opening” scene. That scene gives away the ending before the film basically starts…if you knew how it ended…you probably wouldn’t last very long watching it.

2) The ending. This was brilliant. So many people drill this ending but it was definitely unique, different, and new. I loved it. It made the experience “real” and gave the audience a true idea of how people might react in the wild. I totally bought the ending and think it was perfect.

3) The Emotions. As much as I was unhappy with the lack of diverse sharks, I loved the film as shot as it encompassed the range of emotions for a couple stranded: fear, depression, anger, and confusion. Great acting and great script.

Overall this is a good film...it could have been great but overall it was good. The fact is, after the film was released, I went to the Caribbean and took a trip on a “Rhino Rider” in which I rode this inflatable raft with a motor attached. Mine died at one point as I trailed my group. We had things in place where the people ahead of me were to look back for me to make sure I was there. When my boat died, it took about a minute but they came back for us. Given all of the various checks on us, we wouldn’t get forgotten about…but this fear is very real and the film does that well. I never said I doubted the initial scene leaving the group behind but I doubted the follow-up by the groups re: did they have everyone on board.
