Night of the Living Dead (1998)

- written June 2002

John and Barbara are out to say some prayers for their father when out of nowhere comes “the living dead.” John is disposed of and Barb ends up at an abandoned house. Soon enough she is joined by Ben and a few stragglers in the basement. 7 people against the world. The “Living Dead” surround the house and eventually make their move. The 7 must work together to defeat these beasts, but that will be just as hard as killing their attackers.

Overall for 30th Anniv Edition: The addition to this 1968 version of the film has a new beginning and a new ending. That in and of itself should have had the filmmakers taken out in the back and shot. However the fact that the scenes look so fake and so contrived requires a Salmon Rushdee death sentence. You can tell when the new scenes arrive and I agree with other horror fans that the new stuff not only looks new but also really doesn’t go with the old film. The preacher guy makes the film look religious, as if God is punishing us for being heathens on this planet. The beginning with the corpse was ok if it had been originally there but again, looks fake. The additional scenes also add gore and unnecessary stuff that distinguished the first film. 1968 version didn’t appeal to the “prurient interest” and this film did. And that’s why it sucks! If you compare the re-shoots for the 30th anniversary edition and “Santa Claws” you should find much of the cast of each, to be the very same. Considering the quality of “Santa Claws” you should realize that the 30th anniversary edition was not the way to go.
