- Nathan Stephenson, lead actor of "Heartstopper," agreed to a telephone interview. Anyone looking for more info on Mr. Stephenson or his films, can visit his IMDB page.
Q: Nathaniel, can you explain how you first got into the movie business?
A: This is something I’ve always wanted to do. I guess I started way back doing community theatres, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”. The choreographer also was a casting director and they introduced me to my agent and I went from there
Q: How did find this role?
A: I just went for an audition and have some interviews. I try not to get my hopes up too high for things like this but I got this feeling like I would get it.
Q: Please explain your role in “Heartstopper”.
A: It’s sorta simple. I’m the one she runs into. I’m kinda the bad boy but with the heart of gold. She meets up with me and we get this attraction and connection.
Q: Knowing how movie reviews may skew the perception of one’s product, give us in your own words what you want people to know about this film.
A: I was just beyond excited to do this movie. I’ve never done anything like this before. I’m just the boy next door and this is the first time to do something like this. It was a blast.
Q: If there were one part of the film that was more difficult than you expected, what would that be? Getting a costume to work? Appearing in a certain scene? Certain lines?
A: Just the playing nuances. Such as being terrified yet attracted to someone at the same time. I meant I felt terrified before and attracted to someone before but never both at the same time. Bottom line I’ve never done anything like this in my life.
Q: I found the fact that our 2 main heroes spend basically the entire movie, injured, to be a very unique challenge for the characters in trying to survive their situation. What did you think of that aspect of the plot? Did it make your job easier or harder to deal with this facet of your character?
A: I noticed that too and it was something I had to be conscious of at all times. It was an interesting dynamic. Our characters really had to rely on each other and we had to realize we couldn’t do it without each other. It just added another layer to our characters.
Q: Was there any one day, one moment where you just knew the film would work they way you thought it could?
A: No specific moment because it was fun the whole time. I guess one moment was when James (Chambers) was plunging his hand into the chest of a victim, I got to see the specific effects and it was just really cool. I also got to fire my first gun. Basically the moment I read it, I knew it would be good.
Q: Since “Heartstopper” what have you been working on?
A: Anything to keep me busy. I’ve been auditioning, doing TV episodes. I appeared at a Toronto Fundraiser to help theatre actors and sang a bit. Just keeping busy.
Q: What’s next for you? If you and I were to talk 1 year from today, what do you think would be on your plate at that time?
A: Films. I hope I can be doing feature films. I will be going to L.A. in a few months and auditioning for the pilot season. So a year from now either doing films or maybe appearing in 1 hour TV episodes in the U.S.
Q: Is there any director or actor you really want to work for one day? Someone that you look up to?
A: Director, definitely Quentin Tarantino and Stephen Spielberg, of course. I really wanna work with those two. As for actors, Brad Pitt. I really enjoy his work. Edward Norton, Samuel L. Jackson, just too many people just to name one.
Q: You’ve appeared in some TV series and other television episodes. Is that something you enjoy doing, or do you prefer films, doesn’t matter?
A: My dream is the big screen. I do like TV and enjoy doing that but this was my first feature film and I want to do more films. My real dream is to win an Oscar.
Q: Anything you wish to add for my readers and visitors? Something special about you that they probably do not know?
A: I just love what I do. I give it my all. Just let them know that when they see me I’m giving 100% and nothing more I love to do than acting.
Q: Finally...this is an “Obscure Horror Movie” website. Can you name the last horror movie you watched either at the theatres or on DVD, etc? How about name a favorite horror film that you have seen that most people probably haven’t seen?
A: Well last one I watched probably was “Saw II”, that’s horror right? I will say not necessarily my favorite but the scariest horror movie for me was “From Dusk till Dawn.” I was 8 years old and that just scared me.
Thank you very much for doing this.
