Mutant Vampire Zombies from the Hood (2008)

Summary: David is a cop looking to bust a pair of rival gangs during a drug transaction in a Compton warehouse. Before they have a chance to kill one another, a comet passes overhead and soon everyone outside is a zombie and these unlikely allies will need to band together to survive.

Overall: The general idea of the comet and everyone outside the lead building dying, was right out of “Night of the Comet” (a fav film of mine). But I won’t hold that against them because I think the title makes up for a lot. You really have to go out of your way for creative titles and frankly, I could have almost seen them creating the film’s title and the story following.

As for the effects and the make-up, it didn’t really impress me. It wasn’t all that awful, ala “Zombie Lake” but I sorta expected a bit better. The film seems to start off slow for me in terms of a good story and good acting. Everything is just way too clichéd until the gangs band up to survive and make their eventual way to Big Bear. Once they team up, I started to find the film enjoyable.

Through no fault of their own of course, I really thought C. Thomas Howell looked old...much older than his years. Felt bad for the guy, remembering “Hitcher” and other films. Of course, then I catch that VH1, reality show “Celebra Cabara” and wow, he looked so much younger in this movie now!

I’d say go watch the movie. There’s enough fun, spoofy, well-written scenes in the overall scheme of the film to make it worth your time!
