- Melanie Robel is appearing in the film, "Post Mortem, America 2021." Anyone looking for more info on Melanie or her work, can visit her at her IMDB page.
Q: Melanie, can you tell me a little bit about yourself and how you first got into the movie business?
A: I never really wanted to be an actress. I was a musician, but due to an injury and moving to Florida, I decided that I was done with music. Then between punching a red headed boy and making a band director cry, I was threatened with being expelled. They called my mum and said I was to be expelled. She explained that I would have loved that, so as punishment, I was put into drama class. My drama teacher, Kevin Buck told me that since I used to sing, I should take dance classes so I could become a triple threat. Instead, I fell in love with dance. I quit theatre and focused on becoming a ballerina. However, I was training to be a soloist in the Orlando Ballet Company, and was also part of a semi-professional company. On my opening night of the ballet, Dracula, as a soloist, I was dropped and injured during a lift. There went my dance career. So, I went with my sister to an open casting call for acting. I figured what the hell and auditioned too. My first audition and I got a management company, took acting classes and went to L.A. However, between the wrong hair colour and being mismarketed, I couldn’t get a agent. I went home and did school stuff. Then did my first short film, Grieve and got asked to do more projects. So here I am, acting, enjoying myself and taking acting classes again. We will see what happens next.
Q: Would you please explain your part in "Post Mortem, America 2021"?
A: I was Rattlesnake Sally, a teenage killer, who is a part of Severin’s crew of assassins. Severin is played by the wonderful Jim O’Rear. Sally is a very interesting character. She is religious, but she kills people and I feel that she has a conscious. I think that every time Sally kills someone, a part of her soul dies. Sally can shoot, is good with knives, drives a hearse and is a great fighter. Very well rounded I think. She has a very interesting background, but I can’t give that away.
Q: Knowing how movie reviews may skew the perception of one’s product, give us in your own words what you want people to know about the film.
A: I feel that people are either going to love it or hate the film. It’s not a full length movie anymore, but is now being released as chapters. Chapter one has been released and I was told that chapter two will be released this month. I am in Chapter two and looking forward to seeing it. I enjoyed watching chapter one. Jim O’Rear, Linnea Quigley, Edward X Young, and Monique Dupree were great!!! I am happy I got to see Monique Dupree in action and to see her work. The interaction between Jim O’Rear and Monique Dupree was fantastic. Aslo, Linnea Quigley is a real sweetheart and is a really amazing actress. Having scenes with her was a lot of fun and I feel I learned a lot from her. I really love watching her work.
Q: If there were one part of the filming that was more difficult than you expected, what would that be? Getting a costume to work? Appearing in a certain scene? Certain lines?
A: It was more physically demanding than I expected. I wore cowboy boots, snake patterned vinyl pants and vest and long, black, coat. It was made of cotton canvas, like the old cowboy dusters, so it was really heavy. I got to do all my own stunts and had to plan out my scenes with the Zombies. So, thank you to everyone who helped me block out our action scenes. We did mostly outdoor shooting and it was quite demanding physically. Chasing Zombies is really hard work, thank goodness for the endless supply of water and apple juice.
We did an extra shoot, where I was in this awesome and really old graveyard. I got to read from this extremely old bible that was in old English. It was a tongue twister to read. My thought was that I haven’t read, or done Shakespeare since high school and that I need to get back into theatre.
Q: Was there any one day, one moment where you just knew the film would work they way you thought it could?
A:
I really don’t know how to answer this question. When I worked with and did my scenes with, Linnea Quigley and Larry Laverty. I feel I was in the most wonderful place ever. I totally forgot about the camera, the people and everything around me. It was such an awesome feeling. I think that was “the” moment for me.
Q: Looking back, I know that you’ve also appeared in other films. Can you tell me a little about them and your experience with it? First, “Grieve?”?
A: That was the very first short film I did. I have to tell you, that it was the worse film experience ever. No one had their lines memorized and it was very unorganized. I had to do a lot of improv on my scenes and there was a lot of he said, she said drama. I felt I had to save all my emails to prove that I wasn’t involved in all the drama. It was really a sad situation and I almost felt I would never go back into acting. Luckily, I met other awesome people and it proved to me that what I experienced was not a normal set. Thank you everyone on the, For Nicole’s Sake, set for showing me the positive side of filming.
Q: How about “Bikini Monsters”?
A: Bikini Monster is about a scientist who wants to make the perfect being. Instead he keeps getting rejects. Mike Christopher from, Dawn of the Dead, is a policeman and did a great job. It made for a long days for us Bikini Monsters, because we had, full body, airbrushed, make-up on. We couldn’t sit down once while shooting, because we didn’t want to smear the paint. It was a lot fun, but also a lot of hard work.
Q: How about “Stories of the Paranormal”?
A: Stories of the Paranorma, was also an early work. It’s a series of short films, think of the twilight zone, but more for teenagers and it is on youtube. It was a very good way to gain experience and I met some great people.
Q: How about “Alien Vengeance”?
A: It’s a drive-In, rape, revenge, kind of a movie. It has some very funny moments, picture a romantic moment with a “pool-noodle”. It is a very Ed Wood type of a movie, best served with a soda and popcorn. When I am in a bad mood I put it on and it always makes me smile, so I feel better.
Q: What's next for you? Can you tell me what else you have going on in 2011?
A:

Zombie’s are Real?
This is one of the most interesting horror stories I have been a part of. It really isn’t a typical Zombie movie and I have a great feeling that it’s going to get really good reviews. I am Melanie Jones, a news reporter. The hard part of this role, was that I had to look at the camera for a change. It was a lot of fun and so very different. The ending will blow you away, I never saw it coming. The lead actor is Eli Scwab and it’s written and directed by Haddid Beezama.
Q: Is there any movie director or producer you’ve never worked for that you really want to work for one day?
A: I have a list, so we will see. I really want work with Michael Cuesta, a producer/director. Terry Gilliam, Ron Howard, Clint Eastwood, Lucky McKee, Guillermo Del Toro, David Madison, Rob Zombie, and Marc Fratto.
Q: What do you look for when picking projects?
A: I look for a script with a story with a good plot, a beginning, an end and a lot of cool stuff in the middle. Something that will challenge me, make me stretch as an actor. Then I look at who is going to be a part of the project, who will I have scenes with. However, when I get an agent/manager, then it will also be what they recommend.
Q: Finally...this is an "Obscure Horror Movie" website. Can you name the last horror movie you watched either at the theatres or on dvd, etc? How about name a favorite horror film that you have seen that most people probably haven't seen?
A: I love Netflix. I just saw, Dear Mr. Gacy, with William Forsythe. He is such an amazing actor and he scared the crap out of me. I had to leave a light on and made my two cats stay in my room with me.
My favorite horror film would be, Wait Until Dark, with Audrie Hepburn. Whenever you loose one of your six senses, it’s always scary. In this case she is blind and most of the film is shot in shadows. One of the freakiest movies ever, I feel there aren’t many films like this anymore.
Q: Thank you very much for doing this.
A: You’re very welcome and thank you for having me.
