Q: Ms. Ryder, can you explain how you first got into the movie business?
A: I actually LOOKED enough like someone else and was hired as her photo double/stand in!
Q. Who was that?
A: Tracey Ullman, it was for the movie "I Love You To Death," I had a lot of fun on that set, I got to hang out with Tracey, Kevin Kline, River Pheonix, Martha Plimpton and even Pheobe Cates, it was a blast, River
made a veggie pizza for us and to top it off I was directed by Lawrence Kasden!
After that movie I did "Chips the War Dog" with William Devane, Robert Miranda and Robert Munns and then "Waiting for the Light" with Teri Garr and Shirley McClaine, Seattle was rockin’ with movie jobs at that time so I also was in "Dog Fight," "My Own Private Idaho" with River and Keanu and I also did a movie with a major upcoming actor Elijah Wood of Lord of the Rings fame and then I was on "Northern Exposure" for two seasons and then the TV and movie industry just sort of gradually left the Northwest and I went back to my first love and started being the lead singer in bands, raised an awesome son and started popping up in film with actual speaking roles in 2009.
Q: Speaking of which, would you please explain your acting role in "Wendigo: Bound By Blood?”
A: Thanks for asking Rich, there is an interview between Killerwolf Films Director/actor/film maker/Martial Artist Len Kabasinski and Staci Layne Wilson on Horror.com that explains how I landed the role through my movie-martial arts training with 2 Martial Arts Hall of Famers! One, my husband Sky Benson and Frank Dux of Bloodsport fame …so I won’t go into that, but Len K. loves his chicks in his horror flicks to kick some serious ass and look sexy while doing it, I was hired on to play Actiona the hit woman, being a farm- kid/tomboy growing up and having been trained and fortunate to have been on the USA International Rifle Team while I served in the Army I was comfortable around weapons so I got to have some fun shooting guns and kicking ass, it was so much fun, I even got to do some fight scenes with a famous WWE wrestler named Enigma and a Beautiful Actress/Model named Cheyenne King.
Q: Knowing how movie reviews may skew the perception of one's product, give us in your own words what you want people to know about the film.
A: There is a Tribal folklore tale about the Wendigo who is known as a canabalistic “monster” so to speak, Len K decided the Wendigo should be portrayed as just an ordinary person. which leads to a lot of surprises and shockers and “jump Scares” in the movie.
Q: If there were one part of the film that was more difficult than you expected, what would that be? Getting a costume to work? Appearing in a certain scene? Certain lines?
A: umm Rich, I can’t say right now, I have been sworn to secrecy… let’s just say there is a big surprise scene in this movie, which was very challenging! Lol But yes we did snow scenes which to some would seem difficult, we just found them to be exciting, challenging and fun, I loved Cheyenne King and my fight scene outside in the snow, she kicks my ass, then I kick her ass, we get to roll around in the snow…it felt like being a kid again back in Illinois when my sisters and I would “play fight” in the snow back on the farm!
Q: Was there any one day, one moment where you just knew the film would work they way you thought it could?
A: I could just tell this movie was going to be fun and would be a great project to jump aboard, from the very beginning of reading the script when I was still in Seattle and I was “up” for the role of the hit woman, then when I landed the part, I took the advice of Matthew Maconahay who on the out takes of the film Surfer Dude said that before a movie he would make a cd of songs his character would listen to, to get into character, so I made a cd of some great UFC songs and then incorporated some songs from the Charlie’s Angels movie like Smack my Bitch up and other high energy ass kickin’ songs, I would play that cd at home in the car and also work out to those songs on my ipod in our Dojo and also work the speed bag and kick Bob’s ass (we have one of the dummy’s like Sandra Bullock is working out with on Miss Congeniality called Bob (body on body) and when I started talking with Len and developing the character we came up with a name for the hit woman… Actiona (Ahk-shee-aw-na) I knew that Len was going to be an awesome director I just got such a sense for what he was looking for in my character and the movie, then the moment Len K picked me up from the airport in Buffalo New York and he introduced me to everyone, when I met the cast and crew I knew I had climbed aboard something really special! Everyone was just like a big happy family and so completely pro and helpful, they thought that my husband was coming too and even made up a double bunk bed for us, I even helped Kenny and the special FX team set up squibs (fake blood bladders) and when you have a family/team where everyone is having fun and giving the movie there all, you know it’s going to go smoothly I could just tell and even though the movie was to be filmed partly in the snow and it was freezing outside we all had a blast and worked together huddled up in a Boy Scout camp way out in the middle of nowhere somewhere past Buffalo New York and it was great, I loved it and I am “all in” for the next one! I have my own line of sunglasses and all the sunglasses styles you’ll see in Wendigo Bound By Blood will be RYDER ROCKERS, Leon South has a stop action shot where they show his name on the trailer and those are my shades! Also one more thing… I have a little funny story to add about when I first told my Mom and Dad that I was going to be in my first horror movie, my Dad say’s “what kind of whore are you going to be?” And my Mom gets on the phone and says…”what’s this I hear you are going to be a whore in a movie?” she then chuckled, they both thought it would be great for me and ya know when you have Mom and Dads approval it means everything in the World! So I guess really from the start I had great vibes about Wendigo Bound by Blood, so I jumped in with both feet!
Q: Looking back, I know that you’ve also appeared in other films and TV what was the experience like on Northern Exposure?
A: I had the best time working with the cast and crew, they were amazing, I have been keeping an on-going journal for 24 years now so all of my TV, stage, movie and singing experiences are within the pages of that…all 120 some books give or take, I keep them all in a fire proof safe and am currently looking for a Publisher for my book titled “LOOKING AT LIFE THROUGH ROSE COLORED GLASSES” which at the time of it’s release I will be coming out with a brand new line of my sunglass designs RYDER ROCKERS and some of them will be rose tinted, but yes I had some awesome moments on N.E. Being Native American, I was hired to play one of the towns people and also I was a stand-in for whoever they needed me to stand-in for at the time, I even stood-in for Floyd RedCrow Westerman (Dances with Wolves/The Doors movie) for an episode and since he was also Tribal and I am Cherokee/Cheyenne we had a lot to talk about, we just clicked, also I stood-in for Darren Burrows and Grant Goodeve from Eight is Enough, I talked with Rob Morrow and John Corbett(Northern Exposure/Sex & The City/Big Fat Greek Wedding)about the particular band I was in at the time and what kind of music We liked and I just have so many great memories from the set, I was also brought back for the Vintage 1909 episode because I knew how to shoot a rifle so I got to shoot at Barry Corbin, I found that episode on YOUTUBE and you saw me in two scene’s. but they had to take it down.
2) How about “Waiting for the Light”?
A: That shoot day was over very quick, in the scene I was in, we were filming at the Merchants Café in downtown Seattle Washington we went to hair/make up/wardrobe and got dressed in 1960’s type clothes and our hair was in a 60’s doo I am sitting two tables behind Teri Garr in that movie I am wearing a yellow dress and look like someone from an old lemon pledge commercial, don’t blink you might miss me! LOL! However, since moving to LA in Oct 2009 year I have been cast in some indies with lines, I am on IMDB under KK Ryder Rebel Princess and am putting a reel together from snipets of movies I have been in, I guess you could say I’m pointing my career towards getting into both SAG and AFTRA, finding a Primo Agent and hittin the big screen and or TV. I would love to play a crazy singing Aunt in a kid movie directed by Opie…a girl can dream, can’t she? LOL
Q: You’ve appeared in a few films, but have been involved in some TV, commercials, theatre and you even have some voice over’s under your belt, correct? Can you tell us where we may have seen or heard you in those various projects?
A:
As far as TV of course Northern Exposure, but also I portray a head nurse in a movie of the week starring Elijah Wood, Jo Beth Williams, Tom Skerrit and Darren McGavin called Child in the Night which we filmed in Seattle at a Hospital, I met a very young cute little 7 or 8 year old little boy who certainly has gained popularity over the years, it was Elijah Wood of Lord of the Rings fame! I was in a few plays in Jr. High and High School and I also racked up some College credits at Green River College where I played Meg in Crimes of the Heart I was also in Lil Abner where I played both Stupifying Jones (and even wore a pink and blue lightning bolt one piece swimsuit I designed) and Moon Beam McSwaine, I did a few commercials and one I played “mom” in a Taco Time commercial with my real son Kris who was also an actor/director in his school days and is a wonderful graphic artist these days! You can hear my voice on the internet on several sites, but the main on-going gig I have, is for a computer company in Seattle called SkyTap, I have been the voice you hear on the intro and product tour for about two years now, also I am screaming in the re-mix of the soundtrack title song WENDIGO BOUND BY BLOOD by JC Nickles and was also approached for other projects since I have been trained by some of the most fantastic voice coaches for singing/screamers such as ELIZABETH SABINE (voice coach to a lot of rock Gods like Dave Mistaine of Megadeth, Axl Rose of Guns and Roses) and SUSAN CARR who trained Layne Staley and Chris Cornell/ and indirectly by Maiestro David Kyle through Roger Fisher (Heart) and another Seattle area coach Nelson Del Pino and I have also taught Elizabeth Sabine’s method and a few of my own tips n tricks to school age students and even a few pre-schoolers I don’t teach teens and beyond, I like to teach the little ones, before they pick up the attitude, kids are like little sponges and give you so much! LOL, so I have an undying passion for the art of singing and I also love to create silly voices, hooking up with the incredible rockin folks at Pixar someday and providing a character for a major movie would be such a dream come true!
Q: If you could choose only one type of art (tv, commercials, modeling, singing, voice over’s etc.) to continue working on, what would you choose?
A: Ohhh boy, that’s a hard one, I love to have fun with the lens whether it be for modeling acting or singing or in front of the mic so I would have to say…here is a little dream of mine, I think it would be a royal blast to do a year or two on a popular TV show and do some movies then go out on a big road tour, I would love to tour with someone like Jason Aldean or Kid Rock although I don’t rap like Kid my band KK Ryder and the EZY RYDERS I think would be a great match with our Southern Rock sound and wow what fun that would be, or maybe put some chick power on the road and have the Ezy Ryders do a tour with a great kick ass singer/actress Juliet Lewis!
Q: Tell me about your Southern Rock group “EZY Ryders”…when did you get it together and how did it come about? You look like you have a lot of fun and I read some of your myspace comments, you have some major talents commenting!
A:
A.Oh thanks Rich, The EZY RYDERS, actually the original name for the EZY RYDERS was PAWN SHOP because on our first official gig we did not even have a drummer, we used a mouth percussionist…and we would say that our drummer had to pawn his drums that was, wow 5 years ago and just this past Valentines Day I went back up to Seattle and The EZY RYDERS played Roger Fisher’s (Heart) birthday party! But our very first gig in 2005, Donna Marie a great singer and promoter friend of mine in Seattle had heard a few of my new demos “That’s Still Me” and “Means to an End” I had written and recorded in Nashville with hit songwriter Marc-Alan Barnette, incidentally one of the tunes Marc-Alan and I co-wrote on that day which is on my second CD, the song “Means to an End” we co-wrote that with Meghan Linsey who now is the winner of Can U Duet 2009 of the Country super duet group Steel Magnolia they blew away the competition on Can U Duet and now have a hit song that is climbing the Country charts… “Keep on Loving You” OMG they were just on the Lopez show on Valentines day… anyway back in 05 when Donna heard the demo of these two songs she says “hay my buddy Jimi Hendrix’s baby brother Leon Hendrix is playing a show on his big brothers birthday with his band and Sammy Drain Jimi’s best friend growing up is playing too, why don’t you put a band together and play too”, I had just played with a great pal of mine, Laurie Miller and her band at the Seattle Peace Concert and in between band set ups they put my TV mix CD in and let me wail on my new songs and Otha Major (International beat box Champ) came up to me and we were both going on about each others talent he blew me away with his beat boxing I had just seen and my hubby Sky always had a passion for learning beat box so Otha would come to our house and he and Sky would barter beat box lessons for martial arts lessons so when I got the call from Donna I said “hay Otha I have this really fun gig coming up would you like to be Our vocal drummer?” I scooped up some players I knew from my local chapter of NSAI (Nashville Songwriters Association International) where I was a Co-coordinator, I put this band together and what a fun gig it was, so yeah, I guess you could say a version of the EZY RYDERS played that gig and then I took the bass player Charlie Abbott from that band, the others were busy with family and just life and together Charlie and I put an add in the Stranger and Craigslist and auditioned Randy Shemwell (Rev Randy Ray) on guitar and Denny “Monk” Mason who was a long time drummer pal, they both became one of my Ezy Ryders, so Charlie, Randy and Denny were my official Ezy Ryders we played club and festival gigs two of our faves were Louie Fests and along the way we picked up two harmonica players Bob McCluskey and JJ Southside Johnny and as time marched on Charlie moved on, I moved out to Nashville and then on to L.A. (hop on my blogs and you can read those archives about just how and why I landed in Los Angeles which is where I am now and today the band consists of Rev. Randy Ray on guitar, Denny “Monk” Mason on drums JJ on harp and occasionally Eric Montgomery, Ronnie Dalesio or Laurie Miller on bass and when I take trips to Seattle we play together, We record either at Denny’s house or the Rev’s and then RRR produces the tracks at his home studio and the final results have been some originals as well as covering White Rabbit(Grace Slick) and Bring it on Home (Led Zeppelin) and previously I had recorded the ol John Lee Hooker tune Boom Boom (however Ben Smith (Heart is on drums),Randy Hansen is wailing on the guitar, Jerry Baptiest and Terry and Garey Shelton are playing on it too.) We have really had some great comments on my myspace site as well as the Rev’s, some major players like Mark Welling from BloodGood and Tommy Zvoncheck from Blue Oyster Cult and Goldy McJohn the original keyboardist for Steppenwolf have made some nice comments, even the late Sky Saxon who I would play with in his band from the Seeds would come over to comment with his wife Sabrina once in a while, Leon Hendrix and his band stop by and says hay and we do the same, Myspace, Facebook, Nashville Music Pros and other sites are great ways for me to keep in touch when out on the road too and…now I tweet too, are you on Twitter? I tell ya, you can not beat the promo advantages to get the word out about who what where when why n how on social network sites!

Q: What's next for you? What else does 2010 hold for you?
A: I am so excited to say- I was just cast in a lead role with Killerwolf Films and will be returning to Erie PA. at the end of July and I just put up the poster for Wendigo Bound By Blood on my Face Book page and it was rockin’ to have it be my first feature length movie that I co-star in and to have my name on the poster! My band is included on a Sky Saxon tribute cd compilation disc with Kim Fowley, Iggy Pop, Davy Jones from the Monkees, John York from the Byrds, Nels from Wilco and many others we just finished up in the studio with Billy Sherwood of YES/CIRCA/YOSO fame cutting one of Sky’s songs CRACKING ICE I am up for a cartoon pilot in Hollywood California, I also am one of the super heroes and characters that Jimmy Kimmel Live talk about on Hollywood Blvd. but Sponge Bob, Scooby and a host of others you can see from time to time in Vegas now due to the crack down that was all over the news, you can see us having big fun taking pictures with the tourists and kids, you can see me as Wonder Woman, Pocahontas and Patsy Cline out on the Vegas Strip and I’ll continue just more acting singing and utilizing my skills as an Entrepreneur in art, choir, drama and writing which were all my strengths in High School and beyond!

Q: If you and I were to talk 1 year from today, what do you think would be on your plate at that time?
A: Well Rich, I moved to “the land of the palm trees” and hang my hat as a “Valley Girl” love me some Zappa…I was born on Frank Zappa’s birthday you know, Dec 21st that infamous day the world is supposed to do…whatever… in the year 2012-well all I know is that I’m probably going to wake up with the biggest hangover on the 22nd that Heaven has ever seen- “God…get the coffee pot ready!” LOL, anyway back to the Question… I work a lot in Hollywood now, I love to hike, kick box, ride horses and motorcycles I plan on being in the best shape of my life. I have also teamed up with Doc Joseph Sinda of Neon Lights Entertainment as my business Manager who has worked side by side with Jay Bernstein, however I would still like to find a rock solid booking agent for my band, acting etc.! I am resuming my NSAI duties as a Co-Coordinator, only this time with the Los Angeles-Pasadena chapter. Nashville Songwriters Association International rocks, it was formed in the 70’s by one of the greatest songwriters, Kris Kristofferson and about 3 of his songwriting pals you can find out more by going to the link on my myspace page.

Q: Is there any movie director or producer you really want to work with one day? Or perhaps any actors or actresses you’d like to star with in a film?
A: I am ecstatic to be working with Len and my Killerwolf Films wolf packers again in Erie PA. and also let’s see… Quinton Tarantino, Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw and Repo the Genetic Opera) Jackie Chan, Opie, Meathead and maybe Nic Cage, My buddy Randy Hansen is in Nic’s Directorial debut Sonny playing guitar with his teeth outside of a New Orleans Hotel and he said Nic was a lot of fun to work with…incidentally the soundtrack for Apocalypse Now was all Randy’s work! Let’s see on the chick side of things, Drew Barrymore would be a riot, heck I just love to act and sing so any and all sound good to me!

Q: Anything you wish to add for my readers and visitors? Something special about you that they probably do not know?
A: Ok Rich since you are “Obscure Horror” I’ll tell you about a creepy trick in Jr. High and High School I would do to freak kids out, I would turn my eye lids inside out, the girls thought it was weird the guys and farm kids I hung with, loved it, I was always a bit of a class clown…I think detention was my home room, LOL ! Also, Cheap Trick is still my favorite band and one last thing…I was born with the Indian Head Buffalo on my back as my birthmark and I’m two kinds of Native American, Romanian and Irish but career wise here are a few things actually, #1, I am the Head Vampire Hunter in FANGS an upcoming Comic Book by Comic Book Divas, Jeff Hughes is at the helm, Jason Dube is involved and Josh Barker is the artist. #2 I enjoy writing reviews to keep my songwriting and creative writing muscles tight #3, In the early 90’s I started seeing Los Angeles voice strengthening specialist, Elizabeth Sabine who has trained many successful celebrities such as rockers like Dave Mustaine (Megadeth) Axl Rose (Guns and Roses) Mark Mcgrath (Sugar Ray) and through the years since she knew she was going into retirement soon she passed one of her torches, tips and secrets to myself and a few others so I will continue as a voice strengthening specialist #4, one very special last thing… I have these great little “Love Jeans” with over 150 celebrity autographs on them that have been traveling across the country with me…kind of like the “Sisterhood of the traveling Pants” , I have had them since 2005 and the first autographs were Sir Mix A Lot and some of our famous buddies that play on my cd and they tour with Paul Rodgers of Bad Company Jeff Kathen and Lynn Sorenson and back in 06 I was on the Board of Directors of MUSIC AID NORTHWEST so I became real good friends with Alan and Gigi White, Alan is the drummer for the Progressive rock group YES and together we have been collecting a lot of Celebrity signatures on these jeans as well as friends and a few fans. Alan White and the band “Yes” all signed them while on tour in Nashville-those pics are on my myspace page Alan and Gigi took them to NAMM in Los Angeles and Fleetwood Mac’s own Mick Fleetwood signed them along with some famous drummers Bobby Rondinelli was one of them and then when I traveled to Nashville the kewlest little rockin – soulful chick who sang with Fleetwood Mac in the 80/90’s Bekka Bramlett signed them along with some mondo songwriting pals Bob Dipiero, Marc - Alan Barnette, Doak Turner, and recently the jeans have gone from Seattle, Nashville, Chicago and now as I write this, I recently went to Seattle to be a “Born to be wild Babe” for Goldy McJohn’s birthday (original keyboardist for Steppenwolf) and a few more celebs signed the jeans Randy Hansen, Leon Hendrix, etc…they are more than ready to help the kids and Music Aid Northwest, Gigi and Alan will probably take them from here and then they will go up on a big Celebrity auction because I just can’t fit anymore names on them and it’s time to send them out into the world so they can help very special causes the money will go towards two great causes MUSIC CARES and MUSIC AID NORTHWEST and then I have started another pair and those too have some very special names Billy Sherwood, Tony Kaye (Yes) and the 1st Yoso tour members and more Seattle Celeb musicians, that pair is going to go towards Vanderbuilt Childrens Hospital in Nashville Tennessee and then I’m starting another pair for the Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles, why do we do it? Well, number 1 the jeans are just fun to wear on stage when I sing and just out and about and 2 the money goes towards great charitable organization and it just feels so good to give from your heart…I learned that from my Mom!
Q: Finally...this is an “Obscure Horror Movie” website. Can you name the last horror movie you watched either at the theatres or on DVD, etc? How about name a favorite horror film that you have seen that most people probably haven’t seen?
A: I laughed my ass off and the movie had a lot of those “jump scare” moments, lots of blood gore and people eating guts LOL it was ZOMBIE LAND! And movies I would recommend most deff would be a great musical ala Rocky Horror called Repo the Genetic Opera and also anything by KILLERWOLF FILMS! Len Kabasinski puts an element of fun, campiness, terror with each flick kickin more ass than the last. One that I really enjoyed too was in 3 D and that was fun it was My Bloody Valentine! A great movie that I just love that is quickly becoming a “cult classic” is Repo the Genetic Opera, I have watched that movie so many times with different friends and they all became fans, the movie rocks! Oh yeah and last but certainly not least… my ultimate favorite, I remember growing up in Illinois and my sisters and I every Halloween that it was on, we would watch Whatever Happened to Baby Jane and I just watched it on Netflix! I still love it as much as before, I thought it was neat that you could actually get an oldie but goodie like that on Netflix!
Well KK best of luck to you with all that you have going on! Thank you very much for doing this.
Aw Rich, Right back atcha- U-Rock, thanks for inviting me through Cheyenne King, oh her interview and her pix were fantastic by the way and also your interview with Rob Zombie rocked too! Thanks for rockin’ on the magazine like you do Rich, the pleasure was all mine, see You around and rock on… your magazine is so awesomely kewl…LOL yep I am turning Valley Girl Like, OMG!
