Summary: The city of New York has been burying their unclaimed dead on Hart Island since 1869. Now a real estate tycoon, Rupert King, wants to build "Hope City", a new housing tract to help the poor and homeless of New York. Accompanied by a local New York cop looking for a missing girl's body and some reluctant “volunteers” of the Department of Corrections, King makes his way to the island for the ground-breaking ceremony. But the dead bodies buried on this island aren‘t about to let new folks lives there!
Overall: The film starts off very quietly. There’s a lot of music, very little dialogue for a good 10-15 minutes. I was expecting a sorta Sy-Fy Channel film with mutant mosquitoes and all but the film wasn’t that “cliché.” It had a lot of plot going on, a lot of character development and really tried to be a serious film. It was much better than I was expecting. The appearances by Malcolm McDowell and Mos Def were welcome. Comparison: Skeeter meets Night of the Living Dead |
