Overall:
I am reviewing the first and only season on ABC. The story of the aftermath of a hurricane in which water-based alien creatures infiltrate a small Florida town and begin to take over the bodies of the town's inhabitants. Only some local gaming officials and some tv executives can stop this! Due to Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the aftermath in the southern United States, early on-air promotions were quickly pulled by ABC. The advertising then switched emphasis completely to the alien invasion aspect of the series, while the hurricane received no mention. The premiere was also preceded with a warning that the show featured images of a fictional hurricane that viewers could be sensitive to. What I liked about it: It really seemed to have some good ideas. I was surprised it lasted as many episodes as it did. We got to see some of the actors and actresses in later shows and they really had a nice acting group. It was an example of really bad timing! What I didn’t like: Unfortunately the show's #1 downfall was Hurricane Katrina and the aftermath with the damage and lawlessness. The focus of the show was the Hurricane, damage and how the residents deal with it. Up until then, we had lawful and orderly "disasters." That is until Katrina and the devastation, heartache and poverty that ensued. Stories of rape, pillaging and utter chaos made the nation a little too interested and concerned in this plight of the residents. So just 2 months later, why would these same folks who saw how real this was, see a "fake" show about the same thing. On top of the fact the show was slightly altering the basic concept of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" which has already been copied and remade enough times, folks never bought into the show. |
