Julie James has not been having a good 1st year of college. She’s still a bit stressed out over the fact that her 2 best friends and her boyfriend were involved in a hit and run which eventually led to the foursome dumping a live body into a lake to cover the accident up. They believe the victim died…until they start to receive notes indicating otherwise. Unsure of whether the victim really died or there is a witness who wants to play games, the 4 must reconnect their friendship and try to find their tormentor before they all end up dead!
Overall: Clearly a masterpiece of horror at a time when society needed some good stories and great suspense. The sequel takes a bit of the shine off this film but this is a nice classic. The film is normally lumped in with “Scream” when describing good late 90’s horror for the main reason the casts are so similar: young up and coming actors & actresses who have some definite talent (and Sarah Michelle Geller is in “Scream 2” and this film). The title was definitely a great choice and it makes for suspense. The film also works because of the dilemma they are put in. Drinking and driving, promising college careers and the original incident was an accident. What is the harm? With “Return to Paradise” we have a return to good moral dilemma films. The casting was fairly brilliant since all 4 main characters have been very successful in their own ventures since. And who really can’t like Geller’s character name “Helen Shivers” (Hell and Shivers). Comparison: Prom Night meets Candyman |
