Hostel (2006)

Summary: Josh and Paxton are 2 Americans traveling Europe for fun, sex and drugs. No apparent motivation other than to get laid and smoke weed, these 2 befriend an Icelandic traveler with the same goals. Having fun in Amsterdam, they find out there are even greater pleasures in Slovakia and soon are on their way. And their first night is quite a magnificent event…sex, sex and more sex…until someone goes missing. Soon, Paxton realizes that this trip isn’t fun anymore and he’s gonna want to get out as soon as possible…but now he’s over his head in trouble and there may be no way out.

Overall: Overall: Let me start with this…I really enjoyed the film. But the first 30 mins or so, was like right out of “Eurotrip.” It’s about young people traveling Europe for sex…again “Eurotrip.” In fact, both films have people ending up in and around Bratislava too. Now clearly, this isn’t “Eurotrip” in any other way, but the similarities were a little too funny at the beginning. Once the murder and mayhem starts, all comparisons get tossed out the window.

I thought the film was quite concise, few plot holes, and overall a very good entertaining time. I will say there is a scene where Paxton has chance to escape clean and decides to go back and try to save someone. I think everyone, like me, is watching that yelling at the screen…”what the hell are u doing?” Turns out, the decision really works for the film as we learn so much about the background of the operation and also get lots of gruesomeness in terms of gore and mayhem. I caught the unrated version of the DVD and you can totally tell as you watch that there is no way some of that stuff was played in the theatres…but still it’s a good film. We get very few good horror films anymore that are unique. “Saw” started it and this film is adding to these few American films than can push the envelope. Go get the movie!
