Acacia (2003)

Summary: A couple, Mi-sook and Do-il, decide to adopt a child, Jin-sung, when it seems clear that Mi-Sook cannot have a child. The kid is quiet but not all there as it turns out. Soon he becomes obsessed with a dead acacia tree in the backyard. But life gets really hairy when Mi-Sook becomes pregnant after all and gives birth to a child. That gets ideas into the child’s head, reinforced by Mi-Sook’s mom’s comments about returning Jin-Sung back to the orphanage. At this point the boy vanishes and the tree springs to life. But the marriage is already out of control and no one may make it out of the house alive.

Overall: The film was “ok” – nothing special. The film has some nice ideas but didn’t give us enough time of the adopted child getting used to the family or more of the failed attempts to have kids by the couple. So when the actual pregnancy occurs, the audience can’t be too shocked by it. The film is fairly predictable from then on and the US DVD cover basically gives the ending away. That's also a reason I included the foreign dvd cover above. It was nice of the director to roll flashback scenes during the credits so you can figure out what you missed but otherwise the film just had nothing special to it. Just a haunted kid, a possessed tree and very meddling grandparents.
