Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter (1974)

- written April 2005

The master swordsman Captain Kronos and the hunchbacked side-kick, Professor Hieronymous Grost are vampire hunters. At the invitation of their friend Dr Marcus, they travel to the village of Durward to investigate a series of deaths. What they find are vampires who suck the youth from their victims. These are different vampires which require different ways to deal with them. And only Captain Kronos can get the job done.

Overall: This is really a difficult film to review for me. There are just a ton of fans for this film, which ended up dooming the Hammer franchise. So much hope for this film and possible sequels and this film got killed in the theatres and Hammer was never a force again. And yet, there seem to be very few detractors to this film. They love the ingenuity of the vampires and deaths and twists on the original legend. The film was a fine film – nothing special for me but not at all bad either. The film ahs been called “Most underrated Hammer film Ever” and maybe it is…I thought it was amusing with all the swordfights and new vampiric twists. Interesting story, interesting acting. So I say “go for it” and see what you think.
