Jubeh is a loner who’s being sent from school to school, unable to make it anywhere. He’s still affected by the death of his father, which he was responsible for. Jubeh is such a good baseball pitcher, one day playing catch, he accidentally killed him with a pitched ball. Seido’s High School baseball team has been placed up against the Gedo H.S. team and Seido’s principal knows his team can’t win. Hell, they won’t even survive the first inning, literally. Once he discovers Jubeh, he will do anything for the kid’s help. But Jubeh doesn’t want to play, until he meets a nice kid just looking for a friend, “Four Eyes.” Once the Gedo team literally kills every members of Seido, once Jubeh can lead a rematch. And this time, the gloves come off.
Overall: Let me say this right “off the bat”…there isn’t any baseball in this film. They’ve got bats and balls and analogies but the moment the umpire yells “Play Ball,” it’s Japanese Martial arts from there on. Lots of gore, lots of camp, lots of cheese. It’s a fun film, no doubt about it. It’s even quite hilarious in parts. But don’t think this is an attempt to remake “Bull Durham.” Sometimes there are films, which are so “out there” and “different” and they are worth the viewing, regardless of any flaws…and this is one of those.
