Su-Mi & Su-yeon are sisters who have come home to live with their dad. Once they arrive, they realize their evil stepmother also resides there. As time goes on, nothing in the house seems normal and what’s worse…the house may be haunted. The two sisters only have each other to hang to, so when the stepmother tries to influence them, all hell will break loose.
Overall: Let me start with…I didn’t get it at first. I saw the film, thought it ended one way, then caught the deleted scenes & interview with the director and exclaimed… “No way.” This film really leaves so much up to the viewer to piece together and figure it out. The film gives us scenes & facts, but never truly concludes anything…it’s up to us to do so. Not everyone will like a film like this but it’s different, for sure. . . . Spoilers . . . . . . . . . . Ok, so in case you watched it and didn’t get it, let me summarize. Su-mi has multiple personalities caused by trauma of her mother committing suicide and her younger sister being killed when the wardrobe that her mother was hung in, fell on her. Su-Mi blames herself and her step-mom. She goes to her dad’s house and basically creates separate beings of the step-mom & the younger sister and acts their parts out with dad…essentially giving rise to incest with dad. So as you watch the film, the step-mom doesn’t exist until the end. The sister doesn’t exist either but tends to appear as a ghost…which you’ll figure out via the outfits & flashbacks. I think a flaw the film has, is that at least for Americans/westerners, we want our films spelled out. We want you (director) to tell us what we just saw…If we have to piece it together, we may not “get it.” Frankly, I didn’t get it at first. But given the information, a 2nd viewing, it makes sense and can show us what sort of genius we may have here. I do think that the acting was well done all around, except for the father. That guy never looks like he’s gotta clue what’s happening and I think the character just wasn’t bright enough for the story. I think dad should have been smarter than he was. I have no real comments about the deleted scenes because I think that although I’d have liked them in the film, the director is correct in that they would have better explained the film…and he didn’t want that. I think the deleted scenes definitely would have helped clue the audience into the truth...but the director wanted the film to get made exactly how it was, and giving us too much info would have ruined his work. So, my recommendation: don’t watch this movie when drinking, doing drugs or while tired. And make sure you're prepared for needing a 2nd viewing. Like “Memento,” you need to be 100% ready to watch, learn and pay attention to understand this film. For those who do not wish to use their brain, then stay away from this film. If you want something that you won’t forget…something different, new and exciting – then this is the film for you. Comparison: Memento meets Identity |
