Orca (1977)

Captain Nolan is trying to capture whatever animal species will get him the most money but this time, his attempt is gonna backfire. He accidentally kills a pregnant female killer whale and in doing so, enrages the male who seeks revenge upon Nolan. The whale destroys the local fishing village forcing Nolan to chase him towards the North Pole until the battle can ensue which will ensure no one makes it out alive!

Overall: When I first saw this film, it got me both scared yet bewildered about killer whales. Years later, I sit here and wonder how many scenes were actually shot by the directors, as opposed to documentary filmmakers. The film is highly exaggerated and I still find my disbelief not suspended enough to enjoy the film. I just can’t buy the fact that the whale is so intelligent enough to sink fishing boats, knowing exactly which boats belong to which people, as well as sinking beachfront homes, again knowing whom they belong to. And then creating a fire on the pier such that the whale jumps out of the water relishing with joy the damage he has caused. Basically we can see a version of “Moby Dick” in play here. The Whale plays Ahab and Nolan plays the White Whale. And the film hopes you will see a Pink Elephant and buy the film’s premise.
