Det. Lincoln Rhyme isn't in such good shape anymore. A devastating accident at the scene of the crime has left him paralyzed and only able to use his brain and a few fingers. It is death that he wants, but patrolwoman Donaghy isn't sure she wants to help. She stumbles across a crime scene and photographs the critical evidence, stuff most cops would have missed. The NYPD needs help to solve some serial killings and they run to Det. Rhyme but in his condition only his brain is usable, so he enlists Donaghy as his "go-fer." Her deft touch and his instincts and they have this serial killer running - right where he wants to. He's playing with them too, by using an old book and copycatting the crimes detailed inside. The killer has a motive that will amaze you but his will to win the game versus these 2 coppers, will be deadly. Question is, will Det. Rhyme and Donaghy catch the killer before he finishes the book?
Overall: Decent film with a good story. Actually by paying attention to the opening credits, you will easily find the motive. It will take you longer to figure out who it actually is. Angelina Jolie is fairly decent, and Denzel Washington is surprisingly good (isn't he always?) even without the usual action sequences involving him kicking people's butts. Shows his true acting ability by making it come from his breath, not his feet. Comparison: Seven meets The January Man |
