It’s the summertime and Alice doesn’t have much to do. No potential mates in her life, she just decides to go through her day dreaming up scenarios and possibilities. However, the 14 year old girl is about to have a summer no one will forget.
Overall: To my readers, this isn’t exactly a scary film or borderline “thriller” but it is shocking. No, it’s not porn...but it is a film out of France from 1976 and it’s not the average “coming of age” film. This is a sexually graphic movie and given the age of the character and now what we know about the actress, the movie is shocking. To give you some examples of the “offending” scenes: there is a scene where she is nude and an earthworm is placed in a certain area and practically inserted inside, another where she is walking home decides to play games with her underwear and a nearby dead dog carcass, as well as a chicken who just can’t survive the cutting via a dull knife (and it’s a real chicken...). There’s more too, as the girl basically tries to invent things to do with herself and to herself. And it only took 25 years to get it out of France and off to the rest of the world...oooh, that’s a shock! The director, Catherine Breillat, has been doing lots of supremely controversial films, all involving sexual exploits of young girls...needless to say this was her first film and as of 2005, there are no less than 10 more available on DVD which, I hear, are just as shocking.
