Man Bites Dog (1992)

This is the docu-drama of 4 French film entrepreneurs and their attempt to film a murderer as he spends his days killing people. The movie is about Ben and he narrates most of it, with the help of the 4 filmmakers, telling all about the people he kills, why he does so, and how he grew up. And of course there is all the murders you want, right on camera. The film is intermixed with the murders and the scenesdesigned so you could find out why Ben is killing people. Essentially he is a middle class man with no job but just a love to kill and to kill often. But the documentary starts to go wrong when Ben’s exploits start to get the 4 filmmakers injured. And slowly 1 by 1, they begin to die off. But the real question is, will Ben make it through the movie or will he end up a scene on the cutting room floor.

Overall: Very interesting film. Another film I reviewed, "Diary of a Serial Killer," (1998) kind of flirts with the ideas in this film (this being made in 1992) but this does it a whole lot better. The murders are very realistic and when I first saw it I really wondered how they could do this film so well. The 4 filmmakers use their real names (ala "Blair Witch"). The only problem with the film is the subtitles, since the film is in black and white and too much of the backdrop is light colored, making 1/2 the movie illegible. Nevertheless, you get the point. Just make sure you don’t watch the scene when Ben is eating clams. Could be one of the sickest movie scenes ever.
