The Village (2004)

The Village of Covington Woods has been a nice place to live for a long time. There’s no crime, no need for money and everything is pure. That is until the usual marriage rite of courting causes jealousy. One man will end up on his death bed and the sacred rules of never entering the woods will be tested. Seems the villagers and the woodland creatures have a truce. Don’t go in the woods and they won’t come into the town. However, to save one of their own, someone is finally gonna have to break the rules. Their future may be forever altered.

Overall: Well folks, by the time this film is over you will realize that this isn’t a horror movie. It’s scary at times and the trailers tried to portray it as another “Sixth Sense” but it’s not. I think Shyamalan did a nice job with this movie but the marketers ruined it for everyone. This is right out of a “Twilight Zone” episode to be sure but realistically it’s just a good mystery film. Nothing is what it seems to be and once you recognize “the twist,” that’s when the audience either gasps or yells “Oh, brother!” I liked the movie and I really enjoyed the truth within the film. Once Ivy reaches the wall, I had other ideas of what was happening but was pleasantly wrong. Trust me, this is either a “love it or hate it” film and I just want to warn viewers who haven’t seen it, not to build up your expectations. You may just enjoy it.

In response to his review of “Deuce Bigalow 2 : European Gigolo,” the famed film reviewer, Roger Ebert decided to name his all-time worst films. This film made the list. Here is what he said:
To call it an anticlimax would be an insult not only to climaxes but to prefixes. It's a crummy secret, about one step up the ladder of narrative originality from It Was All a Dream. It's so witless, in fact, that when we do discover the secret, we want to rewind the film so we don't know the secret anymore.
