When John Klein, a Washington Post journalist, and his wife Mary finally find the house of their dreams, they just can't believe their luck. On the way back, Mary nearly runs over a winged figure and crashes the car in the process. She hits her head badly and later dies in the hospital. Two years later, John all of a sudden finds himself one night in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. He has no idea how he has journeyed the 400 miles in less than two hours. But everything seems like it is déjà vu and there is something about this "Mothman" and may be the key to everything in John’s life.
Overall: Based on supposedly real events from the 1960’s in West Virginia, I think this film could have given the viewers more. I came out of the movie wondering why I still knew so little about "The Mothman" and really wondering why after 2 hours I had bothered. In and of itself, it’s not a bad film but the plot isn’t enlightening enough. It’s 2 hours of coincidences and mysterious events…but nothing more than a guy who is getting "prophecies" ala "Dead Zone" or "Donnie Darko." I think the biggest flaw to the film is a failure to explain anything – and that’s not saying that what really happened was explainable but I expect the movie to try and give us the most obvious explanation, even if far-fetched. Just come out and say there is an alien being screwing with people’s heads so it can wake others up on avert disaster. But instead of doing that, it just tosses other weird ideas out there and has no true conclusion. Comparison: Donnie Darko meets Roswell |
