Mary Reilly is a servant in the home of Dr Henry Jekyll, devoted to her position and her master. Seems that he’s the best master she’d had, which is a scary thought. Slowly, a gradual friendship between Mary and the doctor begins. However, Mary's quiet presence is thrown upside down when she meets Dr. Jekyll's assistant, the handsome but enigmatic Edward Hyde. Although initially repelled, Mary soon finds herself drawn towards his passionate nature. But Edward Hyde is not all he seems...and Mary starts to fall for both of them.
Overall: So let’s just say first that this is an adaptation on the original Stevenson story. Written as a book by Valerie Martin, it basically takes Stevenson’s novel and re-writes it from the perspective of a servant girl...a lonely girl at that. Overall I thought the film was decent. I’m a big John Malkovich fan so I enjoyed him and even the small (and basically useless) addition of Glenn Close. The problems I had though was that it didn’t have enough (for me) to buy her attractions to both men. I think they needed more interaction for me to truly buy what they were selling. I enjoyed the end and even how Mary sees the change from Jekyll into Hyde (and vice versa). Her accent was on par with Kevin Costner in “Robin Hood” but her performance was fairly good. Overall it’s a decent film and go ahead and have a viewing but you won’t need a 2nd one. Comparison: Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde meets Maid in Manhattan |
