Diary of a Serial Killer/Rough Draft (1997)

- written December 1999

Nelson Keece is one hell of a journalist and when he researches for a story, he really becomes the character. After finishing his story on drag queens, he notices a man (Stefan) walking the streets, who had been making friends with a transvestite. After following this man for a ways, he sees Stefan kill a young girl. He's frantic to escape but Stefan isn't that slow. Stefan gets Nelson to do his greatest work ever follow a serial killer and write about him. In an effort to placate Stefan and later run and visit the police, Nelson agrees. But after Nelson realizes he can't protect himself or his girlfriend, Juliet, he soon realizes he must go all the way on the story. Detective Haynes has been following Stefan's tracks for a long time and once Nelson is on the case, the conclusion starts to become very clear. But the question is, will Stefan still outsmart Nelson, or will Nelson become a killer himself?

Overall: Weak film with something of an interesting idea. The problem is killers who even are wacky enough to think they can still be safe won't ever let stories get published knowing (or figuring it out) their career will end just as fast. That and no journalist could last very long emotionally while people die all around him. The idea is somewhat unique but still done unrealistically. Gotta enjoy Arnold Vosloo as Stefan, last seen as the mummy in "The Mummy."

Comparison: Seven meets All the President's Men
