House of Frankenstein (1944)

- written July 2004

Dr. Gustav Niemann and his hunchback assistant Daniel escaping from the prison in which they have been held for the past 15 years. They come upon a traveling Chamber of Horrors that supposedly includes the remains of the infamous Count Dracula, run by a Professor Lampini. Neimann wants to return to his home and resume his work of creating life from dead bodies and take revenge upon his accusers. But to do this, he must resurrect the bodies of Frankenstein’s Monster and the Wolfman in order to truly make his experiments work. Be careful for what you resurrect…it might fight back.

Overall: Loved the casting of Lon Chaney & Boris Karloff but didn’t like the new actors for the Monster & Dracula (new up until that point in the series). Dracula comes off as a submissive servant and the monster just looked useless. The casting of those other characters really didn’t allow this film to be as good as it could be. This is a sequel to “Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man” but actually doesn’t have a relative of the Doctor Frankenstein in it – just the monster and Neiman trying to be the “next Frankenstein” by serving as the new evil doctor. It’s an interesting film but not as good as the other monster films.

          Comparison: Thinner meets The Wolfman
