Gargantua (1998)

- written June 2004

Jack and Brandon are out in the Pacific Ocean searching for what’s responsible for series of earthquakes hitting these Polynesian islands. However they discover mutated creatures which now appear to be like giant Tyrannosaurs and are stomping through the island. Just when they think it can’t get any worse, everyone realizes the creatures are a family looking to be reunited and will eat anyone that gets in their way. And the U.S. marines aren’t gonna let that happen.

Overall: This was a bad film! Compared to some more recent films the effects in and of themselves aren’t that bad. The creatures are very realistic but they just aren’t either scary nor interesting. The film exposes them as mutated salamanders and show a scene of chemicals leaking into the ocean. But since when do Salamanders spend time 100 feet under the ocean? The acting isn’t very good and Adam Baldwin is a long way from his best role in “My Bodyguard.” This portrays itself with box cover and advertising as a horror film but basically it is more like a PG love story for kids involving monsters who just wanna reunite with each other and a bunch of humans hell-bent on destroying the world. The movie can best be summarized with the kid exclaiming after encountering the baby monster: “He Likes cheese balls.” Cartman and his Cheeezy Poofs would be proud.
