Prince Prospero is using his castle to shield townspeople from the “Red Death,” a plague flowing through the countryside killing thousands. However, everyone within his land is safe…until a man with a red cloak appears and seeks to stop Prospero once and for all.
Overall: Well Edgar Allan Poe’s story is fairly short so to do this story would require a lot of creativity. Basically Roger Corman sought to do the film by throwing in some romance, some injustice and a little devil worship to boot. Needless to say none of that exists in the actual story and might have been better without the devil worship had they stuck Prospero with greed and debaucherous attributes. Interesting in that towards the end you could see a little bit of “Hellraiser” in the story about creating one’s own hell. I thought that this movie was a lot like “Caligula” without the devil worship. Comparison: Caligula meets Scarlet Letter |
