The Tomb of Ligeia (1965)

Vernon Fell is lamenting the loss of his wife, Ligeia, when he meets up with Lady Rowena who he eventually marries. But Vernon has some secrets and Rowena wants to find them out, no matter what they are…and what ever did become of Ligeia anyway?

Overall: Based on Edgar Allan Poe’s story “Ligeia” this film although somewhat decent still gets silly at times. Poe’s story is entirely narrated so that was a difficulty Roger Corman was gonna have to take care of. Also Rowena spends much of the story convalescing or dying whereas Corman has her running up and around in this murder mystery. Also, the ending is massively different between the two and although Poe is a classic damn fine writer, his story leave s a lot to be desired. That’s not to say Corman doesn’t have his flaws. The story is weak since they’ve tried to adapt a narrational story so the transition from death of wife #1 to Rowena as #2 isn’t very believable. What does Rowena see in him? The film really tries to be a “Murders in Rue Morgue” with a bit of “Macbeth” included. The cat stuff is silly and not even connected to Poe’s Story. The ending is almost too dramatic and reminiscent of Price’s either works such as “Theatre of Blood.”

Comparison: Murders in Rue Morgue meets Macbeth
