Scared to Death (1947)

From a slab in the morgue, a dead woman tells her story of how she got there, through a maze of murder involving a hypnotist, a midget and a mysterious figure in a blue mask. And an ex-cop who can’t seem to do anything right may just end up solving the crime.

Overall: One of the only color films to star Bela Lugosi and even then he wasn’t even in make-up. He plays the hypnotist Professor Leonide and a nice creepy professor at that. The film is almost way too much slapstick with bits of seriousness added in. The ex-cop, Bull Raymond, is an utter joke the entire film. He is amusing but his performance confuses the film as to whether or not it should be scary or funny. The fact that the actor appeared in films starring both Abbott & Costello as well as Marx Brothers, doesn’t help. Definitely the film is a giant murder mystery and you won’t figure out who did or why until they tell you. Really there are no clues given which was a bit of a shame.
