Maniacts (2001)

Joseph and Beth are both inmates for criminally insane who meet up inside the institution. Their love starts to grow and 2 people who’ve never had anyone before, now have someone to care about. What got them in the prison was killing other people but once they have the opportunity to escape, they do, leaving carnage in their wake. Once they reach regular society they find a farmer whom they take a room with. But he’s got problems of his own and soon on his death bed he is leaving them with his land…all seems well, until Beth finds out her mother is coming for a visit. Her mother is the Queen of England and Beth is ready for a mother/daughter talk.

Overall: I’ve got mixed results on this film. Some interesting stuff and takes on the insane living in society…but then whole prison scene is downright not gonna happen – no institution lets men and women commingle let alone get away with the stuff these criminals do – no wonder there is so much mayhem, there are only like 3 or 4 prison guards. The pathetic thing is that the film basically is leading only up to the ending. There isn’t enough plot or story that is fleshed out so you are almost just waiting for the climax, which is a bit depressing given that you just spent 85 minutes waiting for that part. I’m a Jeff Fahey fan and definitely think this is a good role for him. Unfortunately the lady who plays Beth died a few months after the film was released. She had some promise but the character traits of the adrenaline were a bit unbelievable.
